Prototype Rails, Cocoa Beach
I
n the past I have called Prototype Rails the “Winter National.” It is. Held in Cocoa Beach, Florida, over the first weekend in January for the past dozen years, you don’t have to be a snow- bird or refugee from the frozen north to want to attend. It is just one of the best model railroad weekends of the year. Over 250 of us came from all corners of the U.S.,
(including Southern and
Central California, neither of which is known for hard winters), in between, and parts of Canada to share our models in the display room, attend one of 84 clinic slots, dig through the photos at Bob’s Photo and John LaRue’s table to research what is on our workbenches or eventually presented as seminars, and just visit on the sunny deck overlooking the Atlantic. This meet has a relaxed at- mosphere conducive
to making new friends, seeing old ones, and marking

Cocoa Beach is the home of the “Shake N’Take” car projects, and Greg Martin led this year’s edition for a National Car Company, 37-foot wood reefer with steel underframe. The base car is an Accurail HO 40-footer supplied by the firm with the body and underframe pieces sectioned and milled in advance by Dennis Storzek of Accurail. Pre-registered par- ticipants received a “kit kit,” printed instructions and a walk-through of the project. The idea is to bring the completed car back next year. Why don’t you sign on for 2014?
