Be- cause of the relatively short distances, there was no need for a dedicated din- ing car and sleeper service, and this re- sulted in a much shorter train. Any and all dining service on the Silver Streak Zephyr was handled in the ob- servation car. Kato’s Silver Streak Zephyr is led by an EMD E5 locomotive named Silver Bullet. This is one of only nine E5 A- units that were owned by the Burling-

When I first saw the announcement for Kato’s CB&Q Silver Streak Zephyr, I immediately thought that there would have to be several add-on sets to stretch this train out to the length we are used to. Most famous “named” pas- senger trains were ten cars or more. The Silver Streak Zephyr that Kato put together in the set is only five cars and includes only one engine. After a little bit of research, however, I found that this was the prototype true length for this train and that Kato was 100 percent correct. The Silver Streak Zephyr was a train which covered about 250 miles in
