MAITLAND TOWER HO


The Maitland Tower kit builds into a model of the tower's initial configuration and can be modified to represent a number of other Erie west end towers. Maitland also broke up the block between Glen Echo and Cold Springs on the Dayton Branch and was used by the DT&I to issue trains orders. This served to extend the tower life more than anything else and remained in service well into the Conrail years. Crossing Shanty not included

Carette dies and presumably its litho plates, the origins of the car therefore pre-date the start of the 1914 war. This indicates a much higher quality model compared to what we were producing at that time. On six-wheel bogies, rare in that era, Carette had an envied posi- tion in the English market through Bassett-Lowke’s London shop and cat- alogs. Its more serious scale models were very prototypical, particularly for the British who were very attentive model railroaders. Carette and Schoen- ner made the finest scale or near scale passenger cars in the larger gauges judging from extant photos this writer has seen. ner, Gunthermann, to name a few from the late 1890’s on, made lithographed floor runners from realistic to very playful for our domestic market. These toys couldn’t help but set standards which influenced our nascent toy train manufacture.

Carette, and Marklin in the 1890’s and early 1900’s were the preferred tracked trains for their quality. Ives first clock- work models were directly copied from German precedents before finding its own “American voice,” so to speak. The last under discussion here is Kraus-Fandor, a firm started in 1910, initially to make tin-printed clockwork trains for export, later electric. The Standard Esso tanker, circa 1920’s to 1930’s, is an example of the parent company’s tin printing tradition which scion Dorfan continued here. We can observe its ladder and small ledge are rendered flat on the tanker body, but with raised rivets resulting from form- ing, plus data which rarely appeared on similar Ives, Lionel or American Flyer printed models. When Dorfan closed in 1934 we were not to see such quality again until 1941 when Marx began producing ³/₁₆th scale O gauge freight cars.
