Storing visual effects Visual effects studio Framestore has chosen Avere Systems’ FXT 4500 Edge filers to manage rendering and storage requirements. The studio’s visual effects have been used in such films as Skyfall and War Horse. Framestore CTO Steve MacPherson said the decision to choose Avere was based on “its ability to deliver the type of metrics, analysis and identification of hot files essential to production efficiency.” The edge filer can deliver up to 150TB of Flash in a single cluster and was built “to meet the challenging demands of workloads found in the entertainment industry,” said Ron Bianchini, president and CEO, Avere Systems. www.averesystems.com www.framestore.com

BBC S&PP digitally restores Queen’s Coronation footage The Digital Media Services team at BBC Studios and Post Production has digitally restored the original televised footage of the Queen’s Coronation. First broadcast in 1953, BBC Parliament is set to air the footage exactly 60 years after the original broadcast, on 2 June. The footage was ultrasonically cleaned, transferred, digitised, graded, grain reduced and dust busted. The results were then transferred to HD videotape. Colourist Jonathan Wood said, “We took a lot of care to ensure that the final restored footage had the right balance between looking clean and refreshed, while retaining the essence of the day it was

captured.” Clive Hodge, head of Digital Media Services at BBC Studios and Post Production added, “Remastering the footage of the Queen’s Coronation for today’s digital world means it can be enjoyed by a new generation.”

Waters chooses K-Tek boom for House Hunters Grant Waters, sound mixer on HGTV’s reality show House Hunters, still relies on his original K-Tek boom, purchased 10 years ago. Waters explained, “This pole just fits in my hand perfectly. I do a lot of reality, and if I’m running a lot. It’s light and it fits my body.” This has allowed Waters to overcome the difficulties associated with producing House Hunters, which is shot mainly in houses with standard height ceilings. As such, the boom mic needs to be kept out of shot, yet close enough to ensure good sound. “That boom I have is perfect for this,” Waters said of his K-Tek boom, which has been rebuilt for him by the company. www.ktekbooms.com

Anton/Bauer powers northern lights footage: UK-based filmmaker and composer Philip Clemo has captured footage of the aurora borealis, using Anton/Bauer batteries to overcome the difficulties of filming in Tromsø, Norway. Clemo chose DIONIC HC and DIONIC HCX batteries, part of Anton/Bauer’s Logic Series, which are capable of performing in sub zero temperatures. The batteries powered Clemo’s ARRI ALEXA film-style digital motion picture camera throughout the 12 day shoot, as Clemo explained: “The temperatures I shot in ended up being -4˚F, and I got the same results as I got back home.” www.antonbauer.com
