Presentation is ‘Virtualising broadcast playout — a life without cables’. Moving broadcast playout workflows into the cloud requires two big changes. The first — removing tape and moving into a file- based world — is on track. AS-11 and the work of the UK DPP have charted this course already. The second — replacing point-to-point SDI and moving
transportable, flexible files with metadata will be the single most effective change to delivery formats since Post-it notes in the ‘80s. Delivering an AS-11 file into the cloud cuts out errors and frees up humans from re-typing and re-validating content. Emerging standards for IP
stream infrastructures permit video, audio and metadata to be transported over Ethernet networks, rather than via SDI switches and cables. Using IP streams removes the last obstacle holding broadcasters back from moving to a virtual,
Sky Sports goes 360 for Champions League
By Fergal Ringrose
SKY SPORTS chose EVS’ live multicam media delivery technology, C-Cast, for the launch of Sky Sports 360, a multi-camera video highlight selector within the Sky Sports iPad that made its debut during
Champions’ League Final coverage last month. The Sky Sports 360 second
screen feature makes use of EVS’ C-Cast live multicam media delivery technology to allow viewers to choose replays of saves, tackles, and goals from over 20 different camera angles
and cost effective technologies has allowed Deluxe in partnership with Cinegy to launch MediaCloud at NAB 2013 which offers broadcasters the ability to start delivering on the promise of the cloud today. Speakers at the session will be Alex Stichbury, chief technology officer, DeluxeMediaCloud and Lewis Kirkaldie, head of Product Management, Cinegy. After coffee break we move into ‘Content Exchange & Catchup TV platform’, presented by Charles Lesoil, chef de projet, CANAL+ — Direction Technique
during the game, including slow-motion clips. Sky Sports subscribers are also able to access an up-to-date aggregated Twitter feed and match statistics. “Our investment in C-Cast technology means we can provide our viewers with an enhanced experience and allow them to re-live key moments of the game,” said Keith Lane, director of Operations at Sky Sports. “C-Cast easily integrated into our existing infrastructure allowing us to bring in the second screen feature.”
is ‘Moving to a fully file-based core infrastructure: Case study on RTÉ project FAST — File Acquisition and Server Technology’. Myles Donoghue, project manager, RTÉ presents the case study, introduced by Tony Taylor, chairman & CEO, TMD. ‘The future of sports
broadcast: towards collaborative production and media delivery’ is a case study sponsored by EVS and presented by Nicolas Deal, ICT V & A project manager, UEFA Information and Communications Technology. After that we have ‘Creating a holistic media organisation for content creation and distribution in a multiplatform world.’ The lead speaker is Eric Minoli, chief technology officer/chief information officer for TFO, the French language cultural and educational TV network of Ontario, Canada — and he is introduced by Hervé Obed, CEO, ProConsultant Informatique (PCI). First to the podium following the afternoon coffee break is Rune Hagberg, solutions architect at NRK Norway, to discuss ‘NORDIF3: Nordic broadcasters use a cloud to exchange content’. This cloud-based case study is sponsored by Tedial. Two more case studies will
round out the day before closing remarks and the drinks reception. The first will be sponsored by Spectra Logic, and the final session details remain to be confirmed. Latest updates can be found on the Agenda page at

The C-Cast Agent — a 1U
server located in the OB truck — communicates with EVS’ XT/XS production servers to retrieve, process and transfer the media to C-Cast Central. EVS’ IPDirector content management suite then selects and creates clips along with associated metadata, such as keywords, describing the action. Packaged media clips are then fed via the C-Cast Central database out to the Sky Sports 360 app.
