Studiotech goes compact for OBs

Melanie Dayasena-Lowe travelled to Paris to visit one of Studiotech’s new compact OB

production vehicles dedicated to the African

broadcast market

STUDIOTECH HOSTED a series of open days in Paris and Brussels to showcase one of its latest production OB vans. One of four new vans, built in-house by Studiotech in Brussels, was on display in Paris last month to provide visitors with hands- on experience of a range of new technologies. The vehicle has OB and DSNG modes, so can be used for both video productions and transmission purposes. Studiotech can adjust the built-in equipment to technical advances or to customer requirements. With equipment such as eight Sony HSC300 cameras, Evertz video routers

and multi-viewers, bidirectional satellite transmission, a For-A video switcher and Clear-Com intercom, Studiotech’s newest OB van meets all technical requirements. Built mainly for the African

market, the four-wheel drive Mercedes Vario is compact but can accommodate a crew of nine. “It’s compliant with the FIFA regulations for football shooting. With an integrated transmission facility, you are totally independent and can go everywhere you like,” explained Jean-François Bogaerts, consultant and former co-founder and technical director at Studiotech. The unique features of the van, namely the four-wheel drive and air conditioning system, make it particularly suitable for African markets. This type of compact OB van is also well suited to drama, concerts etc, according to Bogaerts. “We found there is a market mainly for Africa or even in Europe where it can be used in historic towns — there are very narrow streets and this is a limitation for larger vans.” In addition to showcasing the

WHEN THE Brussels-based television production services facility Videohouse needed to install new loudness meters in the fleet of OB vans it employs for live sports coverage it turned to RTW. Videohouse chose RTW’s TM9 and TM3 TouchMonitors to help it comply with current EBU-R128 loudness standards. Its video team has installed the TM9 meters in the company’s larger HD/SD-capable outside broadcast vans, and the more compact TM3s in its smaller OB vans and SNG trucks. A division of the Euro Media

Group, Videohouse is regularly contracted to broadcast live weekend coverage of the

Belgium National Football Team (Rode Duivels/Red Devils), the annual Cyclo-Cross worldwide cycling event and other major sporting endeavours. In addition to ensuring the audio is smooth for these projects, the audio team at Videohouse must make two different mixes of each broadcast to cover two of Belgium’s three official languages (Dutch and French). Because of this, it must pay

extra close attention to loudness variables. For that task, Videohouse chief sound engineer Koen Bredael and his team use the four AES inputs included on the TM9 and three AES inputs included on the TM3 meters to measure the different mixes.

“We ordered the TM9 with the 3G SDI-embedded option, since most of the audio that we are working on is embedded,” said Bredael. “In fact, we chose most of the available software options that RTW offers to give us the versatility we need for our various programming setups. It’s nice to have those options.” The TM9 features a nine-inch touch-sensitive display, with software that visualises multiple sources simultaneously and supports the ability to display the same signal on multiple instruments in parallel, each with dedicated defaults with both horizontal and vertical operation. When equipped with the 3G SDI option, which

Videohouse chose to include, the TM9 is capable of providing a view of up to 32 digital channels. With its 4.3-inch touchscreen

the more compact TM3 TouchMonitor is well suited for smaller production and post production environments such as

Videohouse’s SNG trucks. The TM3 stereo version handles analogue and digital audio, while the TM3-6CH version also supports six-channel digital input (an upgrade option for stereo units is also available). www.rtw.de

OB van, there was a range of Evertz equipment on display since Studiotech France is a distributor for the manufacturer in France. Established last year, Studiotech’s Paris office focuses primarily on promoting, selling and engineering Evertz products. In charge of the operation is Gérard Maisan, regional sales manager – France. www.studiotech.be
