Europa League Final scores with DPA microphones
By Fergal Ringrose
OUTSIDE BROADCAST specialist United chose DPA Microphones’ 5100 Mobile Surround Microphone to capture the ambience of the Amsterdam Arena when SL Benfica played Chelsea in the 2013 UEFA Europa League Final last month. Huub Lelieveld, senior sound supervisor for United Outside Broadcast and Studios, said, “UEFA was adamant that the broadcast quality had to be top class as this was a huge 35 camera production that was going out to broadcasters all over the world. We wanted to make sure the audio quality would be as high as possible and that we captured the ambience of the stadium in phase coherent surround so that it sounded huge in surround, but also still sounded great in stereo and even mono.” DPA’s 5100 Mobile Surround
Microphones require no external signal processing and are versatile enough to be mounted on a camera or microphone stand, suspended, or simply handheld via a hand grip. Lelieveld, in conjunction with his colleague Mischa Kortleve, tested the DPA 5100 microphone during one of the UEFA preliminary rounds in the Amsterdam Arena to ensure they were the right choice.

THE NEW G&D CONTROLCENTER- DIGITAL
For where you’ve gone and where you’re going
“The 5100 was rigged in the catwalk of the stadium where it was able to capture the whole arena in surround,” he said. “We complemented this system with four DPA 4006A Omnis, which were hung from the catwalk in each of the four corners of the stadium, and we also used two DPA 4017B Shotguns positioned on our two Steadicams as these were smaller and lighter than the microphones we usually use.” Based in Hilversum, United is part of
the Euro Media Group that has production and post production facilities in Belgium, France, England, Germany, Italy and Switzerland. For the UEFA Europa League Final, United provided the live broadcast feed to Infostrada Sports, which distributed it around the world.

Megahertz delivers new HD OB vehicle to Cyprus
By Melanie Dayasena-Lowe
MEGAHERTZ (MHZ) HAS delivered a high definition outside broadcast unit to Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC). The unit is designed to be resilient, both against power failure and the high temperatures experienced on the island in summer.
The OB is based on a fixed-axle
Mercedes truck with coach building by Spectra in the UK as part of the MHz contract. The vehicle has a single expanding side along its full 12m length to provide space for replay operators in the main production area. The separate audio area has provision for 5.1 channel surround sound to match the HD vision capabilities, including a Studer mixer. The truck is equipped with 12 Grass
Valley cameras, including two super slo-mo cameras and two with wireless links. The cabled cameras are connected by triax, and motorised cable drums are fitted at the rear of the truck to speed rigging and de-rigging. The production switcher is by Ross, with router, interface products and multiviewers from Evertz and graphics from Chyron.
Originally built to cover events during
Cyprus’s presidency of the European Union, the unit now covers sport and entertainment events all over the island, including locations where the available power is unreliable. To maintain critical equipment should power fail, the truck is equipped with an 8kVA UPS, and the tender vehicle (also supplied by Megahertz) contains a 110kVA, three-phase diesel generator capable of powering the complete system if required. It is important to keep the crew
comfortable during summer temperatures, which can exceed 40˚C. The vehicle was built with a high level of insulation to provide natural protection, and a custom-designed Daikin air conditioning system was installed, with multiple compressors to provide redundancy and ensure reliable cooling. “We ordered an SNG truck from Megahertz in 2011, which was delivered on time and on budget and has worked precisely to our requirements,” said Yioula Kyriacou, head of Radio and TV Studios, Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation. “We had no hesitation in returning to Megahertz for our HD outside broadcast unit.

The new G&D ControlCenter-Digital is the KVM Matrix Switch that’s ready to integrate with your broadcast equipment and installations today. Modular and able to adapt to virtually any environment, it’s also ready for the future.
As a modular system, transmission cards can be CAT or fiber or both and can be replaced during operation. Each port is flexible, to be used as an input or output. The ControlCenter- Digital is cascadeable and fully compatible with the G&D DVICenter. Like the DVICenter, it also provides brilliant video quality, is intuitive and has an easy to configure user interface, a monitoring facility and SNMP.
The system supports all relevant signals – single-link DVI, PS/2 and USB keyboards and mice, audio, USB 2.0 transparent and RS232. For high video bandwidths, a dual-link DVI/Display Port will follow. A host of other features include the capacity for multi-monitor workstations with CrossDisplay-Switching, three redundant power packs (replaceable in operation) and, of course, G&D’s renowned solid build quality.
For the stations and studios of today and for the ever changing demands of the road ahead, the new ControlCenter-Digital from G&D.
