TVBEurope 35 Summer of Sports: OB Focus
Group of six LiveU employees reach Kilimanjaro summit in order to test the abilities of live video transmission technology in extreme conditions
prepare so we spent four months getting fit. Only one of us had any experience of climbing and that was pretty limited. When we arrived at Kilimanjaro the scale of the challenge quickly became clear and this wasn’t made any easier by our commitment to broadcast at the same time, twice a day, every day: it was hard enough to breathe for yourself as we neared the summit, let alone talk to camera! Before we set off we had no idea
of how much — if any — cellular connectivity we would have on the mountain. We knew that there were places that it was likely to be possible and vice versa but no detail at all. This is why we took the BGAN unit with us. We also wanted to reflect the developments that BGAN units have made in terms of portability and lightness in recent years, which dovetails with our technologies. Physically the greatest challenge was the altitude: 40% of the people who try and climb Kilimanjaro don’t make it. Also, although it was supposed to be the dry season, for those three days that I mentioned we had
constant snow, rain and hail without it stopping for a second. This was also a great test for our equipment, to achieve connectivity while withstanding the extreme elements. We only took one LU40 unit with us and we were very confident about the Go-Pro cameras so we had no kind of redundancy apart from batteries: lightness was everything. The funny thing is that
when you get to the summit of Kilimanjaro you can’t stand there for more than 20 minutes because of the lack of oxygen. This meant that broadcasting from the summit for us non- climbers wasn’t realistic. So we had to use the store and
forward functionality on the LU40, record ourselves on the summit and then the first two guys to the summit had to rush down to base camp to make it in time for the broadcast. It was all quite frantic but what an achievement! Yes, it was very hard sometimes but both us and the equipment — a big thanks to Cobham Satcom, Go Pro and Inmarsat — made it and achieved everything that we set out to do.
