On the road to Rio

Based in Munich, sono Studiotechnik employs 40 staff and has over 20 years experience in the international

systems integration (SI) market. Here the company’s CFO, Franz Olbert, explains how much of this growth is associated with a strategic decision to target the rental market associated with international sporting events

Systems integration: LSB control and Harris multiviewers on the workshop bench

WITHOUT DOUBT, the last three years have been very good for us at sono Studiotechnik. Having targeted the international sports event market, we then needed to create a production concept that could bring real benefits to our customers and differentiate us from other suppliers.

Our concept of the flyaway

production facility has been several years in evolution and today we are starting to reap the benefits of this investment. One of the biggest names in international sports broadcasting is HBS and we are proud to have been working with them since 2006. From

Austria in 2008 to South Africa in 2010 and Poland in 2012, we have worked closely with HBS, helping to refine the all- important television broadcast services around major events. Next year, events in Brazil will generate some of the biggest global viewing audiences ever seen. For this reason, it is essential that the broadcast infrastructure is absolutely right and that it can be proved to be right well ahead of the main event. In selecting Sony Professional as its prime contractor, HBS has chosen a partner that understands the extraordinary demands that a project such as this can generate. We are proud that Sony, in turn, has selected sono Studiotechnik to build a technology backbone that will connect the 12 separate football stadiums and create a broadcast network capable of supporting the highest quality high definition (HD) and 4K images.

Franz Olbert: For Brazil 2014, Harris has recommended that we use its new Platinum IP3 router

This summer sees the Confederations Cup being staged in Brazil: in many respects this represents a test run for the main event next year. But even so, it is an event where we must be absolutely precise and accurate in our organisation and support. For this event we have constructed one of our flyaway production containers and already we are busy constructing a further 12 containers for next year — one shipping container- based production facility for each football venue in Brazil. One of the key factors that we

must prove to Sony and HBS is our ability to keep to very exact timescales. We started to build the first container on 7 January this year and it was ready for acceptance testing by Sony on 19 February. As soon as it was passed, it was shipped down to Brazil where it will provide the IBC facility for the Confederations Cup.
