Industry associations and market actors test various aspects of high-end creation and delivery as the Beyond HD Masters event gathers pace. Fergal Ringrose reports
OUR TWOsummer 2013 conferences, both to be held at BAFTA, continue to build momentum. Below, Jake Young summarises the latest announcements around our IT Broadcast Workflow event on 9 July. We’re delighted that vendor
body the IABM has joined industry association BKSTS in officially supporting both events — and IABM director of Business Development John Ive is back on board to chair our Beyond HD Masters event on 11 June, having helmed all our previous Masters series of HD and 3D conferences in recent years. Ive is a member of the
European and UK High Definition Forum, IBC Council and director of the Professional MPEG Forum. He is also a fellow of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), a fellow and silver medal holder of the Royal Television Society, a chartered engineer and member of the IET. Speaking of SMPTE, we are
really delighted that the Society has agreed to support both our events through a media partnership this year. It is further high-level endorsement, and part of the agreement is that SMPTE will provide a senior-level speaker for Beyond HD Masters. A number of high profile speakers have already been confirmed, and will be added

to our provisional agenda on the web site in coming weeks. For Beyond HD Masters we have also agreed a media partnership with
3Droundabout.com, the online trade magazine for stereoscopic 3D content creation, delivery and display. Subtitling expert Screen has signed up as Gold Sponsor for Beyond HD Masters. Screen specialises in developing products for the preparation and delivery of subtitling and value-add information services across multiple platforms and devices. Test and measurement specialist Phabrix has been confirmed as Silver Sponsor for the event. Phabrix has established itself as a leader of innovative T&M instruments since it was formed in 2005. All this comes at a time when
the market is making tentative steps in various directions on the Beyond HD journey. Spanish
Managing changes for IT Broadcast Workflow
By Jake Young
TVBEUROPE’S IT Broadcast Workflow event is growing in strength with a Platinum Sponsorship from Cinegy; Gold Sponsorships from EVS, MediaGeniX, PCI, Tedial and TMD; support from the IABM and SMPTE; and case studies from NRK, RTE and UEFA already announced. Cinegy, which focuses on the
research and development of media and television software and technologies, has come on board as the conference’s Platinum Sponsor.
The latest confirmed Gold Sponsor is MediaGeniX, developer of WHATS’On, the integrated software suite that manages cross-media scheduling and content lifecycle processes for linear and on-demand services. Other Gold Sponsors include EVS, which has named UEFA’s Nicolas Deal as its case study speaker; broadcasting and channel management experts ProConsultant Informatique (PCI); Tedial, which has arranged for a speaker from The Norwegian Broadcasting
Coffee break in the David Lean Room at 195 Piccadilly
Corporation (NRK); and TransMedia Dynamics (TMD), which will be presenting a case study in association with RTÉ. ITBW 2013, the fifth ITBW
conference, will be held on 9 July at BAFTA’s 195 Piccadilly venue. The event is dedicated to change management, greater operational efficiency, multiple platform delivery
and business process management improvement in television broadcasting. Registration is open, and
those who book early will save two-thirds off the conference price. The early bird rate is just £49 for the full day including refreshments and lunch. The full price is £149 (all prices are subject to UK VAT).

broadcasting agency Albertis Telecom made the first worldwide UHDTV transmission within the Mobile World Congress show in Barcelona at the end of last month. Albertis showed the DVB-T2 DTT standard with simulcasts available for Ultra High Definition and mobility devices. An 84-inch TV screen was used to test the quality of the system — four times over current HD quality. Partners involved were the EBU, SAPEC, the Polytechnic University of Madrid, La Salle, Sony and producer Lapospo. Julian Clover recently reported
in Broadband TV News that the US Federal Communications Commission has given its approval to the first ever trial of DVB-T2 in the United States. The six-month trial by Baltimore- based WNUV-TV will test OFDM to support UHD within the existing 6 MHz channel
In the UK, Procam TV has carried out a poll of TV industry professionals which found that 36% of those questioned expected to begin filming some content in 4K within the next 12 months, and a further 13% within 24 months. The types of content they would initially focus their efforts on were drama (56%), documentaries (54%), music (33%) and entertainment (25%). And as we report in this issue
(page 6), SIS Live last month tested 4K multi-camera coverage at a Chelsea versus Newcastle Premiership match. The proof of concept test used the Sony F65 camera paired with a Fujinon 75-400mm lens — along with a Psitech 4K Vortex to test the capability of this system in the live sport genre. It feels like the early days of high definition TV testing, doesn’t it? HD took a long time to separate itself from SD and stand on its own legs. Our Beyond HD Masters event is designed to provide a high level debating platform for early endeavours to see whether ‘UHD’ in its various guises can find a market and flourish with a new identity — separate to existing HDTV.
