Philip Stevens discovers how the illusion of extra space is created at a Turkish news channel, resulting in a news set with 270 degree LED display wall by Orad

EIGHT years ago, 24 TV started transmissions from Istanbul as a Turkish-language rolling news channel. Alongside live news output the station, which is part of the Star Media Group, produces documentaries and magazine programmes. The station’s programmes are

mostly viewed on terrestrial platforms – the outlet which is seen as the most important in Turkey. However, the transmissions are also available via satellite and cable, and increasingly through digital platforms that allow viewing on smartphones and tablets. Like most other channels in the country, transmissions still remain standard definition, although the move towards HD

is now gaining pace. To help handle the additional quality requirements of future high definition output, 24 TV introduced two new studios during the latter part of 2012. “To meet our needs, we constructed a large studio that measures around 300m2, while the smaller one is around 200m2,” explains Mustafa Ulas Kacmaz, chief technical officer of Konatus, the SI for the project. “During the transition to the new facilities, one of the original studios was kept online while all the equipment from the other was transferred.” In that way, 24 TV retained its original Sony HXC-100 cameras and vision mixers, and other studio and gallery equipment without any further reinvestments.

Enhanced presentations are available to 24 TV through use of PowerWalls

Spacious look

During the planning stages of the new studios, Yigit Bulut, 24 TV’s chief editor and principal news presenter, put forward his vision of utilising a video wall to help enhance the look of the programmes. “As we were building a new studio from scratch, it meant that we could

take advantage of every inch to create the feeling of as much space as possible,” he explains. “So we were looking at a complex, multi-display LED wall design that would permit us to remove the technical limitations and allow our creative team to focus on the best possible set design.”

A number of systems

were considered by 24 TV before making the choice to install two Orad PowerWall HDVG4 Systems capable of powering 8K images to 14 LED displays in realtime. These displays provide images over a total area of 140 square metres.
