Clear, accurate imaging was crucial when it came to broadcasting medical procedures taking place in Argentina to a conference in Turkey, writes Tom Bradbury


The set-up required the management of a variety of live signal types from two different operating rooms – this is OR2


and two Analog Way Pulse dual scaler mixer seamless switchers for OR2. The different signals from


OR1 were received and processed, and arranged into a two-frame display – main video output – composed of two layers on the left and right halves of the screen. An additional picture-in-picture layer was positioned on the top right-hand corner. Sterin explains: “The idea


was to switch among the four incoming signals from the split frame monitors – four frames depicting several brain and vital signs images – so as to show two signals at a time. This was while always displaying live coverage from the camera (SD-TV/BNC input).” The Di-VentiX II was used in


Mixer mode. Four DVI sources plus one SDI source were connected to the device, and the signal was output in SDI (1080i). “Apart from the configuration challenges which were easily solved by the Di-VentiX II capabilities, one particular advantage that the equipment provides is the layer cropping,” says Sterin. WHEN A conference on minimally invasive brain surgery in Istanbul, Turkey, decided to focus on operations that were being performed in Buenos Aires, Argentina, it was imperative that content was displayed accurately. Buenos Aires-based rental and staging company 2MGNet was called upon to provide a full AV system to transmit via satellite the audio and video signals generated from various medical devices and monitors, through three independent satellite links. Among the video signals


there were four DVI, one VGA and three SDI signals. The objective was to obtain those video signals generated in Buenos Aires from their various sources, process them and route them to the SAT-COM vehicle for outgoing transmission in Istanbul.

According to Nicholas Sterin, project manager at 2MGNet: “Providing clear and accurate imaging was key for this event, since all content transmitted was projected on a wide screen, so as to explain and teach medical procedures to a large number of people.” At the Sagrada Familia health clinic in Buenos Aires, operations took place in two separate operating rooms (OR). 2MGNet designed a specific set-up for each room as the signals from each were different. OR1 had four outgoing DVI signals from a split-frame monitor and one SDI signal from a camera covering all operations. OR2 had one 3D DVI signal and two SDI signals. To handle these different signals, 2MGNet used one Analog Way Di-VentiX II multi-layer high-resolution mixer seamless switcher for OR1,


the co-ordinators on the Turkey side of the event, 2MGNet was provided with an example of one of the four frames depicted on the


medical monitor from which four DVI signals would be received. Originating from a particular medical device, each frame showed a high- definition 3D image of every blood vessel in the brain – veins and arteries. Each of the four frames had a thick grey-white stripe at the side containing numerous data and parameters, which needed to be removed. “As we were asked to remove said stripes to send the video only, we used the Di-VentiX II’s layer adjust menu to zoom in on the input and obtain the source with no stripe as required,” explains Sterin. For OR2, the two Pulses


were used to achieve the same configuration display as OR1. The only difference was the signal types: there was one 3D DVI, one analogue video and one SD-TV from the live coverage for OR2. Sterin explains the configuration: “In order to put all signals together as requested, we decided to merge one background layer and PIP layer into one of the Pulses’ main video output. Then, we sent the main video output into the second Pulse’s input.” Through this process,


2MGNet achieved the same configuration as in OR1. “By
