That was one challenge. Another was the design and construction of the building itself, which didn’t lend itself to a highly centralised installation, meaning that media playback equipment was located close to each screen, with a minimum of centralised control. “We ended up with just a 12U rack in the central control room,” notes Roche. “It was, in hindsight, a brave decision to design it in that way – but, thankfully, it’s worked well.” What gave Roche the most pleasure? “Seeing everything working obviously gave the whole Sysco team a real buzz,” says Roche. “But perhaps I got most pleasure out of how smoothly the whole project went. That was due in no small part to the relationship we built with the Mary Rose Trust, and especially with their exhibition co-ordinator Nick Butterley. They listened to our ideas and allowed us to engineer solutions that really worked within the environment – it was a good exercise in demonstrating how a well-managed team can work together efficiently and cost-effectively.” Sysco finished the physical installation a couple of months ahead of the official opening – but commissioning and updating the final media took until days before the doors opened to the public. That’s not the end of the
story, however. The Mary Rose itself is still only visible to visitors from behind windows – but, when the hull has finally dried out, the

internal walls will come down, allowing visitors an uninterrupted view of the hull. “We may well need to be involved again,” smiles Roche, “and that’s something we’re very much looking forward to.”
