FACILITIES DESIGN

Creating a dignified space for addiction treatment

One of the most important contributions to the Catamarca provincial health system in Argentina has been the creation of the Humaraya Integral Center for Addiction Treatment. From an architectural perspective, the aim has been to create an agreeable space for the discussion of current and future topics related to drug addiction in general, and to provide efficient professional help and assistance for patients going through rehabilitation and social reintegration.

The new building has been designed to provide a therapeutic space and to incorporate a direct contact with the natural environment as part of treatment. The facility will offer three types of care for patients – ambulatory or outpatient care; inpatient or hospitalisation care; and daily emergency consultations. The center is positioned in the North

West of San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca, close to the city centre, and is located just five minutes from the Hospital Interzonal San Juan Bautista, so it is easily accessible in cases of emergency from any point in the city. The building itself covers an area of

.

Conceptually, the center is an open and permeated building consisting of a single floor, east-west oriented, with a direct view of the Ambato and Ancasti mountain ranges. The new building is designed around two

internal courts, which have been used to differentiate two separate internal functions – as external consulting offices, workshops and multipurpose rooms; and the other as emergency service. Particular care was taken during the design stage to surround these areas with natural planting, and to ensure good natural light and ventilation, all connected to the exterior through ample windows, with access to an outdoor recreation facility. The Humaraya Center offers three

well-differentiated access points. The main entrance from Virgen del Valle Avenue offers direct access to ambulatory care, while another pedestrian and vehicular entrance provides access to emergency care from the same avenue. A separate staff entrance is located on a back street. Three different areas were defined

during the design process: Ambulatory care: This area is designed

to offer treatment alongside psychological, psychiatric, psychotherapeutic, and psychosocial support for individuals who
