Extending facilities to meet increasing demand

This article looks at the requirements for a building project to create a comprehensive clinical, haematologic and oncology care facility, as part of the enlargement of the ‘Dr. Juan Pedro Garrahan’ Paediatric Hospital SAMIC (Comprehensive Care Service for the Community) in Argentina.

This building and healthcare project required the enlargement of areas for both outpatient care and for hospitalisation of patients with haematologic and oncologic pathologies. It required substantial changes in patients’ inter-nosocomial care cycle to improve the quality of human and technical care response. The project will provide an increase in admission capacity, through the inclusion, as part of the project, of an admission area for patients being treated with chemotherapy. The Haematology and Oncology Service

of the ‘Dr. Juan Pedro Garrahan’, Paediatric Hospital SAMIC, treats around 400 new patients with malignant pathology every year,

increasing the hospital’s care capability with a further 90 beds. The first floor space is also 2,400 m2

to house technical support facilities. In the future, a further 2,400 m2

are provided free of charge with the institution receiving public funds from the Argentina National Government. The Hospital uses a progressive care system, with intensive care units and intermediate and moderate care units, the Day Hospital and consulting services are of different complexity levels.
