he Giftware Association (GA) has thrown its weight behind the ‘Celebrate an Independent

Christmas’ initiative from The Retail Champion,Clare Rayner, who is encouraging shoppers to buy from local independents rather than multiples in a six-week long campaign through November until Christmas Day. “Our sponsorship of the campaign

is a no-brainer as many of our retailers achieve more than 30% of their annual sales in the six weeks before Christmas,” said Isabel Martinson, GA chief executive. “It stands to reason that the more business they do, the better it is for our supplier members. The industry as a whole will benefit.” Clare Rayner, founder of the

campaign, added: “The Giftware Association’s support is a terrific boost

for independent retailers across the UK and I am personally delighted that such an authoritative and influential trade body is backing the initiative.” Consumers are encouraged to spend

a proportion of their Christmas budgets with local, independent businesses. The campaign is inclusive of all those who serve consumers, including bars, restaurants and salons, as well as traditional shops. To capture consumers’ imaginations and encourage them to make the effort to seek out their local independents, the campaign has been calling on retailers and business organisations to work together to create ‘Christmas Shopping Crawls’. Intended to be fun way to discover local retailers, they offer shoppers an opportunity to win a prize for completing a crawl.

Organisers of EuroCIS, the annual European retail technology trade fair, are expecting a strong turnout for the upcoming show, which is taking place from 19 to 21 February 2013 in Düsseldorf.

The reason is that retailing IT expenditure is a significant growth sector. The development of modern shopping formats and experiences is explosive, and as the upswing in the sector continues, there is also a growing willingness to invest in IT. More than ever, mobile technologies will be the focus for next year. These range from various mobile payment and mobile marketing technologies to the tablets and iPad software for retail staff and the new generations of data entry equipment. IT systems to support multichannel

strategies as well as interactive and connected instore communications will also figure among the trend subjects at the fair. In this context, there will also be a focus on innovative business intelligence solutions for

processing and analysing large data quantities from various channels. Visitors will also see other highlights in areas such as item-level radio frequency identification (RFID), self-service and cash management systems, web-based store and head office integration, efficient loss prevention and intelligent store personnel deployment planning. In 2012 (pictured) EuroCIS extended its portfolio to include multichannel and e-commerce systems. Next year, the multichannel theme will return to both the lecture arena and exhibitor floor. Following this year’s debut, the “Fashion Select” area is also making a comeback, showcasing companies specialising in IT solutions and services for the fashion industry. And trade visitors have free access to the EuroCIS Forum, which includes end user and exhibitor presentations on topical retail IT case studies, innovations and trends.
