lous because of the length of the car but they handled the super tight ra- dius curves without binding and de- railing.
Another feather in the cap of this car is the fact that it rides on BLMA’s 70- ton ASF ride
control trucks. These
trucks feature finely detailed metal wheels that have a nice and prototypi- cal flange profile. Some people fear the low-profile flange because of the notion that there is no way that they can stay on the rails under even the best of track conditions. I am happy to report that on my crummy little 12¹/₂″ radius test loop of stepped on, banged up, im- properly connected track, the cars nev- er once derailed. Put the pizza cutter style flange wheels away, you don’t need them anymore. These trucks are perfect and just pack more value into these hot little TOFC’s. I mentioned that the “as delivered” cars come in the brown TTX paint scheme. Everybody seems to recognize the bright yellow TTX or Trailer Train TOFC’s but once upon a time they were brown. The markings and logo are all correct for the early TTX cars like this and are printed beautifully. The small- est lettering is crisp and clear. The white paint is applied evenly showing now bleed through of the brown car paint. Even the miniscule ACF logo with the arched lettering is clearly visible. Who is going to have time to see that though, these cars are meant for speed on those hotshot intermodal freight
trains. NY100 was never meant to roll along at 15 m.p.h. The deck of these cars has two strips of a tan colored paint which are correct for these cars. Granted, they wouldn’t remain light tan for very long due to the wheel wear and road grime but this is correct for these cars. I am really looking forward to weathering my cars up a bit. Not be- cause they need it, but because I can’t seem to leave anything unweathered. From top to bottom, this car is every- thing that N scale TOFC modelers have been begging for. The car is faith- ful to the prototype from the details right down to the paint-work. The cars also operates flawlessly on all kinds of track from the tightest curves right down to the most unlevel and uneven track. Frills like factory-equipped Mi- cro-Trains couplers as well as BLMA 70-ton trucks with metal wheels make these cars lack the need for modeler applied upgrades. Take the cars out of their plastic containers and run them. They are the total package. Products such as this car make me
want to see more from BLMA. They definitely make me happy to be an N scale modeler. The BLMA ACF F89-J 89-foot, flat car in the brown TTX “as delivered” scheme is currently avail- able and sells for $26.95.—SCOTT LUPIA
