ever, Collis Huntington, the last surviv- ing principal of the company, balked at paying the loans back and used his money and influence in Washington, D.C. to attempt to get the terms of the repayment changed to ones more favor- able to the railroad. A war of words de- veloped between Huntington and two well-known writers of the time, Andrew Brice, a columnist for William Ran- dolph Hearst’s San Francisco Examin- er, and Frank Norris, a novelist, whose book, The Octopus, was a thinly veiled attack on the business practices of the Central Pacific.
The first half of the book chronicles
Brice’s arguments against changing the terms of the loan and the corruption that took place in the halls of Congress as Huntington sought to have his way. The second half of the book looks at the writ- ings of Frank Norris and the historic episodes involving the CP that influ- enced his writing.
Appropriately, it
seems, I found myself reading the book as I made my way west to Sacramento on the California Zephyr. Besides being of interest to anyone who enjoys nineteenth century railroad history, the book also serves as a reminder of the importance of independent journalism and the need to keep a watch over large corporations and the politicians who control the playing field. It was true 100 years ago, and it is true today.–CHRIS D’AMATO
