The often overlooked Zephyr Rocket passenger train is the subject of this lav- ishly illustrated 166 page publication - with maps, photos, graphics, along with Pullman financials and reproduc- tions of the dining car menus. 11″ pages; $40.00. Bill Gustafson’s latest book is a com- bination of how he built his 1:20 sawmill (generally based on the McLean Mill in Alberni, B.C., a modest-sized mill which has been preserved in operating condi- tion) and solid information on how to ap- proach large modeling projects, ideas that are applicable to any scale. The founder of Western Scale Models, Bill began writing books as an adjunct to his line of O scale kits for mining and oth- er machinery. (As an aside, the pattern work and castings were incredible. The word “jewelry” best describes them.) Some HO machinery was made for a time, as well. A few years ago the HO and O scale kits were phased out in favor of his new line of sawmill machinery in 1:20 scale. This book is the result of that effort. Let’s Build a Sawmill has obvious ap-
plications for anyone interested in build- ing a sawmill model. The book goes through Bill’s large (8′-0″ long with a 4′- 6″, L-shaped leg) mill and describes al- most every aspect of the project, starting with the base and working through the structure’s framing and the machinery inside. In one of the contradictions of our hobby, it is easy to understand how a sawmill takes tree trunks and turns them into dimensional lumber, yet what it takes to do that is almost overwhelm- ingly confusing when you decide to add the machinery to a model. The big ma- chines are easy, but, what is the saying, “The devil is in the details?” Since most of us who have a sawmill on the layout want to detail the interior, this is not just an academic exercise. Half the machin- ery is under the floor, half is on the main floor, and half (the third half made fa- mous by the NPR Car Talk radio hosts) is outside or upstairs. In addition to the saws, carriage, green chains and rollers, lumber mills have a collection of gears, shafts, chains and rollers, and some- times belts and pulleys, all enveloped in black grease and darkness. This book will shed light on the subject, and it will help you build your own model. Like any industrial site, no two lum- ber mills were or are alike. The same is and will be true for our models. Instead of a cut this and glue that text, the book discusses such things as timber fram- ing, machinery placement, its operation and how things are interconnected. It does this with a relaxed and enjoyable text and a hundred photos and dia- grams of prototype equipment and Bill’s 1:20 model. He is a good story teller and “thinking aloud” works well here. Some of the information is specific to his large- scale model, but most of it has general
