Denholm Primary School was a unique design and build project showcasing architectural presence and status. As part of a program where sustainability was fundamental to the design, Hacel Lighting assisted in the provision of lighting products to ensure the best possible outcome.
A creative and safe environment for learning was a key attribute to the primary school and lighting played a pivotal role. The lighting design, created by Hacel, provided a system which varied throughout the building, giving the teachers and students greater control over light levels. In keeping with a sustainable program, main areas within the school such as classrooms and staff room areas were fitted with time activated sensors to switch off whenever no movement was detected and where possible low energy lighting was used.
The library, which features double height space, showcases Vici Pendants and Vici Wall Lights, hosting a contemporary and stylish fusion of etched borosilicate glass and steel, combined with branded electronic control gear including dimming and integral emergency. The teaching wing featured Ascension Wall Lights, chosen to support the circular design of the area. Linear Light3 Link and Solo Modules were the product of choice for classroom areas and gym facilities for general lighting, creating a bright and open space for creative activities. Stairwells were highlighted with Metropolis Sculpt, a luminaire which creatively combines energy efficient light sources with a distinctive, innovative design. Corridors were illuminated by the Solara Slim Downlighter, a recessed compact fluorescent luminaire with excellent general lighting properties.
As part of the detailed design process, the building and materials of Denholm Primary School were assessed using the BREEAM Schools Estimator to ensure the best possible outcome. This was reflected in the subsequent provision of an Energy Performance Certificate rating of B+.
