Out and About Quirke McNamara Consultancy Artist’s Studio London, UK

1

Quirke McNamara Consultancy creates an incredibly atmospheric living space for up-and-coming artist.

Lighting designer Susan Quirke and her team at Quirke McNamara Consultancy have renovated a studio for a young Iranian artist. Lighting for each room has been carefully considered to create a space that is ideal for encouraging artistic creativity. Maintenance was a consideration for the project, and one of the key requirements was that lighting should be versatile to allow the client to create changing atmospheres to reflect different moods. In order to meet these demands, LED

lighting from acdc was used throughout the project to ensure that maintenance requirements were minimal. The use of LED also means that energy usage is lowered, reducing running costs for the client. In order to ensure that the lighting scheme suited the client’s desire for versatility, all lighting has been linked to a Lutron control system, which allows for the alteration of colours and programming of set scenes. As the client loves to party, the ability to go from day to night through the lighting scenes is a much-appreciated feature! The team at Quirke McNamara Consultancy put a fitted kitchen together, with feature lighting used throughout the space. The control system has been innovatively used here, allowing the client to set different colours for different zones. Bespoke furniture has been used

throughout the studio, with the bedroom featuring some of the most interesting pieces. A curved wardrobe with edge lighting produces an attractive effect that has been created using LED rope lights that change colour, whilst an incredible ‘floating’ bed effect has been created by underlighting the furniture to reflect against the black resin flooring used underneath. Finally, lighting plays a central part in the aesthetic of the bathroom, with colour- changing fibre optic fittings, as well as LED fittings set into the bath step, highlighting a feature honeycomb wall and in the bath itself.

This project is a great example of how lighting can play a huge part in the creation of a truly unique living space.
