Energy Efficiency

Airports Focus: Manchester Airport Company: OSRAM

A recent lighting upgrade in the arrivals and departures areas of Manchester Airport’s Terminal 2 required a lighting system that would meet the airport’s self-imposed demanding energy targets. Existing fluorescent tube trough lighting had run its course, so Project Technician Jonathan Beswick sought an alternative that would deliver high quality lighting with far less energy consumption. Investigation of such alternatives lead to the specification of

a solution from OSRAM that satisfies the rigorous UK Government Enhanced Capital Allowances Scheme for tax relief on energy–efficient technology investments, providing an easy–to–install and durable design for the airport. The eventual specification was based around 1.2km of OSRAM LINEAR light POWER Protect Flex LED Tape and OPTOTRONIC LED electronic control gear (ECG). “To obtain maximum efficiencies out of our lighting system and allow us to achieve dynamic control of our lighting levels, we aim to control the new OSRAM LED lights through an intelligent lighting control system,” explains Beswick. “The combination of OSRAM LEDs and the intelligence and functionality provided by the OPTOTRONIC LED control gear has enabled us to achieve impressive annual energy savings of above 250,000 kWh. This has made a major significant contribution to our overall carbon reduction strategy and targets.” www.osram.com

Offices Focus: One London Square Company: Havells-Sylvania

One London Square, a 55,000ft² office space in Guildford, Surrey, has undergone a complete refurbishment, with the introduction of a wide range of Concord and Lumiance luminaires. The four-storey, glass-roofed office building cost a staggering £5 million to renovate. A BREEAM rating of Excellent has been given to the building, which has been refurbished using recycled and energy efficient materials where possible with Havells-Sylvania products specified by Chapman Bathurst used throughout the building. One of the key inclusions for the project is the installation of the Concord Officelyte Concave Linear Low profile in the open-plan office space. The luminaire has been specially designed for office lighting applications, with the ability to achieve a Light Output Ration of 90%. Concord’s LED LED 150 luminaires have been used for the

perimeter areas of the office space and the reception areas of the building. The LED LED 50 is a highly efficient and economic replacement for CFL downlights and is perfect for office buildings such as One London Square, which had a requirement for decorative lighting. www.havells-sylvania.com
