EXECUTIVE REPORT

Pro-Turf Equipment Hire’s Instant CCTV is designed for quick set-up.

Variety Show

Exhibitors were in upbeat mood at the recent Showman’s Show. Alan Guthrie reports from Newbury.

Visiting the recent Showman’s Show in Newbury once again demonstrated not only the breadth of equipment and services needed to stage a successful event, but also the opportunities for hirers to serve this market, which has proved very resilient. Despite the severe weather that led to some summer events being cancelled, many did go ahead successfully, buoyed by the mood of optimism generated by the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations and the Olympic Games. Organisers also keep raising their standards of provision to meet customer expectations.

Speedy launched its Event Services division.

Amongst several hirers exhibiting was Speedy, which chose the Show as the ideal opportunity to launch its dedicated

Speedy Event Services division, which is designed to offer clients a complete package including project management as well as equipment. “Speedy acquired EPS (Event Power Services) in June, a specialist in designing and installing electrical services,” said Lee Cowan, UK Sales Manager - Commercial, Retail, Leisure, with Speedy Asset Services. “We had found ourselves working together at events many times in the past, and it made sense to join forces. All EPS staff have been retained and will work from their established base near Cheltenham. There is huge potential in this market, not just for items like generators, lighting and fencing, but also for any other equipment that might be needed before, during and after an event.”

Speedy Event Services Sector Manager, Neil Page, added that “the events industry is one of the markets that have proved more resilient against the economic downturn. Our Project Managers can also advise clients on aspects like environmentally friendly and energy saving products, and provide specific solutions.”

Another hirer exhibiting was Morris Leslie (South East), the Woking- based arm of the Perth-based Morris Leslie group, which specialises in event hire and site accommodation. Prominent on the stand was a 2.5 tonne Manitou MT625 compact telehandler, which the hirer has

adapted by fitting extended forks to load bulk quantities of fence panels and similar items.

Hampshire-based Pro-Turf Equipment Hire is seeking to target a niche with its new Instant CCTV, a trailer-mounted system that can he towed into position by a car, activated and then monitored remotely at a dedicated centre to detect intruders. Power comes from an integral battery or a 110V supply, and data from the camera can be accessed remotely via a smartphone or laptop.

A-Plant’s stand displayed a diverse range of equipment including solar powered variable message signs from PWS of Ireland. “There has been tremendous interest in these units, which were used extensively during the Olympics,” said Marketing Manager, Chris Morris. “They can help with traffic flow at a site, convey information to visitors, and can be updated remotely.”

All power requirements for A-Plant’s exhibition stand cabin were provided by a Grid to Go unit (formerly called the e-Cube) from another exhibitor, Off-Grid Energy. It uses energy stored in quick- charge Lithium-ion batteries to provide power only when needed. If the charge falls to a low level, a backup generator automatically switches on to top up. Solar panels and wind turbines can also be incorporated. A-Plant, which is trialling the machine, estimated that the Grid to Go could have provided its stand power requirements for up to five days, for the lighting, hot water heater, computer equipment and other items. Off-Grid Energy’s MD, Danny Jones, told EHN that additional variants of the product are planned, some of which should be ready to display on its stand at the Executive Hire Show in February.

Off-Grid Energy’s Grid to Go can provide environmentally on-site power.

Also focusing on ‘green’ products was BGG (UK), which officially launched its Sitelight 986K-LED lighting tower. “Rather than
