TVBEurope's News Review By Melanie Dayasena-Lowe
Into the wild: Sound Designer Craig Carter used DPA microphone technology during his 15 weeks of filming in the jungles of Africa, Indonesia, Sumatra and Borneo for The Last of the Great Apes, a 3D film covering all six species of great apes. To capture surround ambience he used a DPA 5100 Mobile Surround Microphone, while for avoiding unwanted extraneous noise he turned to the DPA 4017B shotgun
microphone with a Rycote Windshield solution, which he used on a long boom so that he could capture the sounds he wanted without disturbing the animals. “After taking some very helpful advice from Julius Chan at DPA’s Australian distributor Amber Technologies, I chose the DPA 5100 surround microphone for its sound pressure capabilities and its ease of use in the conditions I was working in,” Carter explained. “Thanks to its compact size and extreme portability, it was ideally suited to these very challenging conditions.”

Subtitling goes live: Screen is behind the technical infrastructure for the subtitling of the new Royal Opera House 2012/13 Live Cinema Season, which includes nine productions to be broadcast live across 32 countries in over 900 cinemas. Simon Hailes, Screen’s CTO, said: “Live multi-language subtitling will always pose a challenge; where Screen’s expertise comes in to play however is in of course providing the best solution but keeping the process as simple and low-risk as possible for the user.” The subtitles for each of the productions are pre-created and the languages required for the particular opera or ballet are delivered and loaded ready for transmission. “The beauty of our Polistream Black subtitle transmission system is that its powerful yet streamlined design fits the touring solution brief perfectly,” said Hailes. “The physical dimensions of the equipment are minimal, keeping the weight as low as possible, and its solid state storage technology and embedded XP operating system makes it incredibly resilient to being moved around.”

HD for the Nations TSL has won the contract to supply systems integration work for the BBC One Nations HD Playout project, which will enable BBC One HD for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. This means that each nation’s channel can be broadcast to national schedules, showing both true HD and up-scaled programmes. “The overall challenge with this project is the amount of planning involved’, explained David Gunn, director of Systems at TSL.

“During live playout, we’ll be replacing sections of SD circuitry and interfacing new HD systems around each of the nations’ existing infrastructures.” TSL built the original BBC Nations SD playout facilities in Glasgow, Cardiff and Belfast in 2007. The first HD upgrade is due to take place for Northern Ireland later this year. Key aspects of the upgrade at each site will include an additional channel of Miranda Colossus automated playout, Pixel Power Logovision
Through the lens: Cooke Optics lenses were used to capture a vision of the Middle Ages for World Without End, a new eight- hour TV drama. The drama was shot on ARRI Alexa cameras with Cooke S4 lenses, varying from 18mm to 180mm.
Cinematographer Denis Crossan commented, “Cooke lenses seemed ideal for this project. Keeping it filmic and painterly on a digital medium really helped. I like the
qualities you get from Cooke lenses — sharpness and resolution without being harsh, and their depth and tonal warmth helped create that look.” In keeping with the period setting Crossan kept the lighting as naturalistic as possible, staying true to light sources such as candles and torches, with some additional bounce light to enhance the fall-off effect. The anti-flare quality of the Cooke lenses proved particularly useful when shooting with flames. “With candles and torches everywhere, Cooke lenses never have a problem in terms of flare — in fact, occasionally with larger torches they would sometimes produce an elongated ellipse when moving through the frame, which I really liked,” he said.
