Dongle dangles: Comrex’s LiveShot has two flexible arms for antenna positioning
standard to maximise quality over poor networks and decrease latency. Dual codecs allow streaming
at different qualities to two different destinations — for example, live over the internet at a lower data rate and full HD to the in-built SD memory card for FTP upload.
The 3G/4G modems plug
into two flexible gooseneck- style adapters, to elevate them above the camera. They are also bendable to provide space between the antennae and to survive hitting obstructions. An Ethernet port can be used for connecting satellite terminals.
MediaMesh portable wireless network Cobham’s MediaMesh is a portable, wireless mesh technology designed to allow journalists to have the capabilities of the newsroom wherever they are in the world. Users will be able to set up their facilities, such as video links, quickly and easily — it comes with its own set-up video. The network is also self-healing, so that if a node fails MediaMesh will work around it. It creates a dense wireless
network covering the working area and can easily be expanded by adding more nodes. Only one node need be connected to the outside world, either through a Ka-band satellite link, Ethernet or 3G/4G mobile networks. The network supports broadcast quality video and audio for live two-ways (with the camera controlled from the studio if necessary), as well as data and voice. Available in January, MediaMesh should give users “that extra agility, to be able to establish a newsroom away from home without having to be electronics technicians or network architects. Open the

Live Plus Dejero Live+ can act as an encoder/decoder for Ka-band satellite systems, and is claimed to be better suited to interviews, as the feedback channel to the server and link quality monitoring is done via a cellular network, which takes about 1.3 seconds, compared to 2 seconds or more via satellite. This new feedback system is available with the new 2.7 software, so can be applied to existing systems. The software can also be run
on Windows computers, using an HD-SDI break-in box, allowing the use of a laptop for about a quarter the cost of a dedicated system. There is also a Dejero Live+ Mobile App for iOS and Android devices, which can bond the SIM and Wi-Fi capability of an iPhone or iPad. It costs $50 per month for a subscription, and should easily achieve 2Mbps connections (up to about 5Mbps on 4G). It can also store and forward full HD. LiveWire Digital has a new iPhone or iPad app for store and forward file-based video contribution for content shot on the iPhone. M-Link Newscaster Mobile allows users to do a quick rough cut and have a choice of
encoding profiles for 2Mbps to 8Mbps. It has pre-configured servers to send it to, whether via 3G or Wi-Fi, and smart send tools so that if you lose your connection it will resume from the last point. It can be played out in the studio once 10 seconds of material have been received. It costs £9.99 in the App Store.
Bolt on wireless The new Teradek Bolt is a compact Wireless SDI Pro transmitter and receiver set offering zero delay uncompressed HD 1080p 50/60 at 4:2:2. It works at up to about 100m, and takes 3G-SDI input. The receiver has dual 3G-SDI outputs, allowing simultaneous monitoring as well as connecting to other Teradek systems. The $1,990 system can coexist with other wireless networks by dynamically adjusting the frequency bands in realtime. Each transmitter can feed video to up to 256 receivers simultaneously without degradation in video quality. Also new is Teradek’s Link mobile bonded cellular hotspot, which has six USB ports for 3G/4G modems, dual Ethernet ports, and built-in dual band a/b/g/n MIMO Wi-Fi. New start up IntraTec has launched three wireless products: Bridge, Bridge Duo and WiFi Anywhere. Bridge is a miniature on-camera Wi-Fi device that takes IP feeds from an encoder or Ethernet connection and delivers a stream of up to 450Mbps over distances of 250m with a standard antenna or 4km with an external antenna. Bridge Duo is a dual radio
