‘There remains much scope for 5.1, 7.1 and perhaps even 22.2 sound systems. If only loudspeakers were subject to Moore’s Law we’d be further forward than we are’
probably do just fine. For those of you working in radio reading this, there is an obvious opportunity.
Workflow engines The concept of the IBC ‘Workflow Solutions Village’ was well-founded and timely. So, MAM systems own the workflow, then? Well, no, not necessarily. While IBC saw many a MAM system (and that covers a lot of ground, as Groucho might have said) now sporting polished, graphical workflow design and management tools (that actually do things and are not just pictorial representations of some underlying fixed code), other formerly less intelligent box products were also getting in on the act. Transcoders were most
prominent among these, probably due to the number of them still being operated somewhat stand- alone, feeding the plethora of nonlinear (once ‘new-media’) platforms. This potential source of confusion over which product is in control of workflow is however good news: improving levels of workflow intelligence are to be welcomed. Being able to decide in which system, sub- system, or devices to vest that intelligence is even better. The use of more sophisticated
workflow engines in MAM software products, whether licensed from Microsoft, Oracle, etc, or developed in-house, is slowly bringing with it much needed improvement in the automated handling of content in our factories. It is increasingly the case that content is required to be processed more according to pre- defined metadata, often available at a comparatively early stage in the contents lifecycle, and less on the basis of ‘watch folders’, the file- based equivalent of a tape being dropped into someone’s ‘in’ tray at some later and far less appropriate point in time. Just like in the motor industry, the aim is one production line, with the details of the required applicable processes on that line determined by the up-front customer order, with whatever options that contains.
Big fish, low prices It was good to see Sony (or Hall 12 as it was otherwise known) firmly back in the game. Its Media Backbone Conductor (MBC) and the assembled collection of products from other vendors suitably ‘plugged-in’ shows the changing face of what was once a business focused first and foremost on the supply of electro-mechanical gizmos.
It was not all SOA, FIMS and software though. The Sony concept demonstrator of electronically panning, scanning and zooming to deliver one or more current day HD standard TV pictures from within a 8K frame
showed the flip side of the coin as to how sports productions, as but one example, might in future need fewer cameras to be deployed rather than the more of 3D. In these economically challenged times, it cannot have

gone unnoticed that Blackmagic Design in Hall 7 was making some very bold statements as to its product list pricing. While DV certainly did its bit to disrupt the economics of ‘broadcast quality’ production years ago, Blackmagic
was clearly looking to demonstrate that silicon and software has still further to go in supporting the ‘more for less’ that buyers from all parts of the industry are seeking. ‘Every little helps’, as your CEO might say!
