10 TVBEurope News Racing certainty for Ki Pro By Melanie Dayasena-Lowe

FORMULA 1drivers Lewis Hamilton, Bruno Senna and Heikki Kovalainen recently took to a digital race track using Sony PS3 consoles when Codemasters, developer of the new F1 2012 video game, brought them together for a promotional event during the Italian Grand Prix. The BBC was onsite to record

live action footage of the event, while UK reseller and systems integrator Digital Garage Group used AJA Ki Pro digital video recorders to capture gameplay from the developer versions of the game consoles. All footage was edited and used to create a BBC segment that aired during the Singapore Grand Prix.

Less noise from HocSonus

All live sound engineers and mixers expect the audio signal to arrive at the target in a state closest to the original source signal, but this may be affected, obscured or distorted by the acoustic phenomenon. The acoustic sound quality is reduced by

HocSonus’ decorrelation technology removes background noise

By Melanie Dayasena-Lowe

FRENCH COMPANY HocSonus has designed a realtime audio technology able to eliminate background noise and acoustic artefacts. HocSonus signal processors are employed by sound engineers for TV sports, live music, talk shows and other live events where intelligibility is an issue. The technology has been used during the French Open and also for the European Athletics Championships in Helsinki this year.

intermodulation due to multi- source, multi-path, phase shifting phenomena, etc. This acoustic background noise that interferes with the diffusion and transmission of audio signals is generated by sound correlation. More than 99% of the background noise is related to correlation (intermodulation). HocSonus has chosen audio

decorrelation of the sound to solve audio transmission problems. The decorrelation technology removes acoustic noise (background noise), which is mixed-up with the useful signal. www.hocsonus.com

Antarctica in 3D: Director of Photography/Producer Ken Corben of Digital 3D, a Los Angeles-based production company, led a crew of 10 to the Antarctic Peninsula. Their mission was to shoot penguin colonies underwater, from the air and on land/ice with a shooting package that included their 3D Epic beam-splitter with Zeiss and Nikon primes supported by the 120EX fluid head from OConnor. “We’d first used the 120EX while beta testing the Quasar 3D rig and found the balance perfect for 3D,” said Corben. “So, when this project came along, we put the 120EX to the test,” he added. “At one point we mounted the 3D beamsplitter to the nose rail of the sailboat with a hi-hat and the 120EX. It made everyone nervous. But the result was great! The ‘tracking’ tilt reveal shots from the glacier’s reflection in the water to the glacier in 3D are spectacular. The 120EX also flew our 3D rig as we shot, everywhere we needed it”. The result of Corben’s Wild Antarctica3D shoot will be a 20-40 minute digital 3D theatrical release for large format theatres later this year. — By Melanie Dayasena-Lowe www.ocon.com

Sekula looped PS3 footage through four Ki Pros over HDMI and into the gameplay monitors, while recording Apple ProRes to the Ki Pro drives. The Ki Pros

were used to record three driver views and one spectator view of the PS3 console feeds simultaneously. Formula 1 2012’s 60fps output was recorded at 720p 59.94 in Apple ProRes and the AJA GEN10 was used for sync. “We needed to record the gameplay to a professional file- based format that the BBC would accept and hand it to them straight after the shoot,” Sekula remarked. “After considering various devices and workflows, the combination of the non- HDCP output and the Ki Pro’s ability to loop the HDMI feed while recording ProRes — without noticeable delay to the gameplay monitor — gave us a simple solution,” said Sekula. www.aja.com

GOPRO’S NEW HERO3 action camera is now shipping worldwide and is available in three models. The HERO3: Black, Silver and White Editions are 30% smaller and 25% lighter than the cameras they replace, are waterproof to 60m and now have built-in Wi-Fi technology. The Black Edition is capable of

capturing HD video at 1080p-60 fps, 1440p-48 fps, 720p-120 fps, 2.7Kp-30 fps and 4Kp-15 fps. The Black Edition can also capture 12MP photos at 30 fps and includes GoPro App compatibility and a Wi-Fi Remote. The Silver Edition shares the same 11MP photo, 1080p-30 fps and 720p-60 fps features as the HD HERO2 camera, whilst the White Edition shares the same 5MP photo, 1080p-30 fps and 720p-60 fps features as the Original HD HERO camera. Vincent Laforet, a Pulitzer

Prize-winning photographer and filmmaker based in Los Angeles said, “GoPro has always been an enabling and disruptive company. With the introduction of the HERO3, GoPro will become even more of a staple on professional production shoots – which is saying a lot for a camera you can buy at your local surf or ski shop.” www.gopro.com
