NI completes digital TV switchover By Melanie Dayasena-Lowe

THE UK’s five-year and £630 million digital TV switchover project came to a close on 24 October with the launch of a new high-power digital TV transmission service in Northern Ireland by Arqiva. CEO John Cresswell and Olympic pentathlon hero Dame Mary Peters took their places at Belfast’s Divis transmitter to turn off the last remaining analogue TV services in the UK. As a result, more than 200,000 households across Northern Ireland will be able to watch Freeview TV for the first

time. The switchover means 98.5% of the population now benefit from better reception across channels on Freeview, including HD. John Cresswell, CEO of

Arqiva, said: “Along with the completion of Digital Switchover, the launch of YouView cements 2012 as a landmark year in British broadcasting. These developments should safeguard Britain’s broadcasting future, an exciting TV viewing platform for consumers, with free-to-air at its core that will continue to support a healthy UK media sector and creative industry.”

The switchover brings to an end five years of preparatory work in Northern Ireland including the construction of seven new

multiplexes and upgrades to the three main transmission masts in Divis, Limavady and Brougher Mountain. www.arqiva.com
