HOMEWARE REBECCA PEATTIE using Rowan Tweed Where are you from? I am from Falkirk in Scotland.

How do you view knitting as a design medium? I am constantly evolving my knowledge and skills of traditional crafts such as hand knit and their use as a medium for contemporary design. I aspire to start at the beginning of the creative process by hand or machine knitting my own fabrics and then creating a fi nished fashion product. I am passionate about striking a balance between traditional and innovative style.

What were your reasons for studying design at Nottingham Trent University? I chose to study on the degree course in Fashion Knitwear Design and Knitted Textiles as I am very passionate about keeping traditional crafts alive and the course gives me the opportunity to explore this passion.

Your 3rd year is spent on placement, where are you currently

working? I am currently on a six month technical knitwear product development placement with Hugo Boss in Switzerland and then I will be moving onto a six month placement working for Eribe Knitwear in Scotland as a knitwear designer.

Why do you think initiatives like the Campaign for Wool are important? By completing the Rowan project I wanted to highlight wool’s multipurpose and sustainable qualities, something which the Campaign for Wool champions.

What do you feel about Rowan and the Rowan project? The Rowan project was a fantastic opportunity to be a part of Wool Week and it was a joy to use such beautiful natural yarns to create my piece.

What was the inspiration behind your fi nal design? I was initially inspired by the forthcoming season trend of ‘Eco Hedonism’ focusing my research on nature and landscapes. I felt that in urban city environments people do not get to see as much nature as they would like. This highlighted the idea of a contemporary art piece that resembles nature and which requires no care. I put considerable thought into my yarn choice for my design and felt that the Rowan Tweed family of yarns would be perfect as the colours resemble the colours found in nature. I have also used the Rowan Renew yarn to promote sustainability as this is a recycled yarn.

What are your hopes and dreams for your future career in design? To graduate and to be successful in the knitwear design industry but keeping interest in the traditional crafts.
