SARAH-JANE COX using Cocoon & Pure Wool DK HOMEWARE

Where are you from? I am from Newport Pagnell in Buckinghamshire.

What were your reasons for studying design at Nottingham Trent University? I chose to do the Fashion Knitwear Design and Knitted Textiles degree at Nottingham Trent as I developed an interest in knitting and experimenting with diff erent materials during my A-Level in art. Through knitting items such as bin bags and wire to create sculptural pieces I found knitting fascinating as basically you can create so much from just two basic stitches. It is this love of knitting that caused me to pursue knitting further and learn more.

Why do you think initiatives like the Campaign for Wool are important? As the Rowan project was in association with Wool Week, I liked the idea of linking sustainability together with trend concepts.

What do you feel about Rowan and the Rowan project? I really enjoyed doing the Rowan project as hand knit is my passion. When we were briefed I immediately researched trends and current issues. I have found the Rowan Award a really positive experience as it has enabled me to broaden my knowledge of both garment and home-ware design.

What was the inspiration behind your fi nal design? On researching trends it appeared that the ideas of sustainability and inspirations from nomadic culture were important. From this colour palettes started to emerge and patterns formed. I chose to do a home-ware piece as I had not explored this before within my course and the Rowan project gave me the option and support to do this.

What are your hopes and dreams for your future career in design? A career in hand knit and knit design hopefully!
