CAITLIN WILLIAMS using Colourspun, Pure Wool DK & Kidsilk Aura Where are you from? I am from Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire.

When did you start knitting? I have always enjoyed hand knitting and had some small infl uences from my mother, who is a big knitter!

What were your reasons for studying design at Nottingham Trent University? I was initially a textile design student but I found that my workshops in knit were the most enjoyable. We were given the opportunity to transfer to the Fashion Knitwear Design and Knitted Textiles course if we wanted to and I’m so glad that I did!

What do you feel about Rowan and the Rowan project? I thought that the Rowan project was a brilliant chance to showcase our work, and with Rowan supplying the yarn for the project, it was amazing that we poor students could still enjoy such a great opportunity!

What was the inspiration behind your fi nal design? My fi nal design is based around coral and hyperbolic crochet. I went to Fibrefest in Devon earlier in the year and saw a huge installation of crochet and knit from under the sea; this is where my inspiration came from. It was really fun to use such a bright colour palette considering that I had previously used muted colour palettes for my other projects.

LAURA WILKINSON using Cocoon & Pure Wool DK HOMEWARE

When did you start knitting? I’ve been hand knitting since a really young age, being taught by my grandma and mum.

What were your reasons for studying design at Nottingham Trent University? I previously worked as an assistant teacher in art and design in a couple of schools before I decided to apply for a design degree. I originally chose the Fashion Knitwear Design and Knitted Textiles course at Nottingham Trent University as I wanted to explore craft and keep my options open. By the time I had to specialise in design, I knew that knitting was what I wanted to do. I love having the ability to create technical fabrics and know all the processes involved.

Your 3rd year is spent on placement, where are you currently

working? At the moment I am living in Belgrade, Serbia and working my placement as a design assistant for knitwear design and retail company, Ivko.

What do you feel about Rowan and the Rowan project? I really enjoyed the Rowan project as it was my fi rst chance to really explore hand knitting and I’ve decided now that hand knit is were my design strengths lie! The project also gave me the opportunity to explore and work upon my colour sensitivity.

What was the inspiration behind your fi nal design? My design was inspired by American culture. I took religious symbols and markings from the Native American civilisation and mixed them with logos and symbols that portray American modern culture. The more the modern culture dominated my design the more the traditional native cultural symbols shone through.
