REBECCA SWANN using Pure Wool DK Where are you from? I am from Ilkley in Yorkshire.

How do you view knitting as a design medium? I’ve always been inspired by the ability to create something new and exciting through a diff erent form of media other than shop bought fabric. I was fi rst intrigued by knitting through my love of yarn and the idea of turning a ball of creative yarn into an art piece.

What were your reasons for studying design at Nottingham Trent University? I chose to do a degree in knit design to explore the design options available in knitting as a design medium.

Why do you think initiatives like the Campaign for Wool are important? It has been great to be able to support the Campaign for Wool through the Rowan Design Award.

What you feel about Rowan and the Rowan project? The Rowan project was a great stepping stone for me to integrate my passion for knitting towards interior design. Rowan gave me the freedom of choice in what I wanted to create.

That was the inspiration behind your fi nal design? For a while I have wanted to create something I could imagine being in my own home as a statement piece, but due to time issues it hadn’t been possible before. Then the opportunity came to work on a project for Rowan and to support the Campaign for Wool at the same time!

What are your hopes and dreams for your future career in design? I have a passion for both fashion and interiors, but at the moment I’m thinking to pursue knit design for interiors alongside interior decoration. More into the future I would like to open a knitting and baking shop where children and adults can come and learn how to hand and machine knit as well as having a bakery attached where children can come and learn how to bake!
