he Legend of the Falls

Iguassu Falls, once known as the Valley of the Butterflies, belonged to the territory known as Mba’e-vera-gaussu which translates to Golden Brightness.

T

he Legend of the Iguassu Falls, like all the best love stories, is a tale of forbidden love. There was a young girl called Naipi who lived in the Valley. She was the daughter of the Chief of the Caingagues Indians whose beauty was so great that the river waters would stop at her reflection.

Naipi was consecrated to Mboi, a god who often took the form of a serpent; however her true love belonged to the brave young warrior in the tribe Taroba. Before the celebrations of her consecration Naipi and Taroba fled the Valley in a canoe. Boiling with rage Mboi twisted his body deep into the ground creating a gigantic crack in the river bed. As the waters crashed beneath them Naipi and Taroba were consumed by the newly formed waterfalls, plummeting to their death.
