FEATURE CONTRIBUTORS The best is yet to come

Mexico is not a new destination for luxury travellers. More than 50 years ago, Acapulco was already a Mecca for the jetsetter crowd from around the globe and in recent years Riviera Maya, Riviera Nayarit and Los Cabos has also drawn visitors from all over the world.

María Pellicer, Editor-in-chief, Travesías

But perhaps most significantly, what has changed in the last decades is that our newest luxury options are more focused on the exclusivity and the originality of the destinations. Now, big resorts and million dollar developments are not our biggest or only asset; what we can offer to buyers and travellers looking for exceptional destinations are small hotels, upcoming and undiscovered towns and the authentic experiences that are invaluable.

On the Yucatan Peninsula, the splendor of the haciendas of the XIX century has been restored as beautiful hotels in the middle of the jungle. Uayamón, Santa Rosa, San José and the majestic Temozón are just a few examples of what can be done with an old hacienda when a good restoration process is able to recover its original beauty.

On the Pacific Coast, small boutique hotels can offer the traveller a more personalised experience with an unspoiled beautiful landscape. Near Punta Mita, the home of many large, good quality hotels, the small fisherman’s town of Yelapa can be found, where entrepreneurs from all over the world have opened their homes for visiting travellers. The experience of staying here has nothing to do with money (even though it is not overly cheap), but with the authentic experience of nature and culture.

But Mexico is a big country, and there are still many cities and towns waiting for new luxury opportunities. For now, only the adventurous traveller can get to explore the whole country. But in the coming years, our options for developing our luxury market will surely increase along with the travellers coming not only from North America and Europe, but also from Asia, Latin America, China and other upcoming economies. Mexico, along with many countries in Latin America will surprise buyers in the years to come, not only with beautiful and exclusive hotels ,but also with authentic experiences and the warmth of its people.
