The first Aman resort in North America, Amangani opened in October 1998. The 40-suite resort, some 2,135m above sea level, is all but hidden to the valley world of meadow and ranch land below. Built of Oklahoma sandstone, Douglas fir, cedar and Pacific redwood, the three-storey resort is cut into the hillside, its design following its contours in an all-but-seamless melding with the land and mountains.
The design accolades for Amangani cannot be truly understood until the resort is seen at first hand: high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows in both the public areas and within each suite, woven cowhide chairs and faux wolf-fur throws throughout. The Library has rawhide and rattan chairs in which to recline as you devour books on the local flora, fauna and Native American culture. The Gallery showcases local art, antiques and craft, from jewellery and pottery to paintings and clothing.
And then there is the skiing. Although a year round resort, Amangani is renowned for providing some of the best skiing anywhere, even providing a resident ski and mountain expert to give daily advice on how to make the most of your skiing. Winter wildlife safaris, horse-drawn sleigh rides into the National Elk Refuge and dinner sleigh rides are a winter highlight at Amangani, especially on moonlit nights.
