diet today - pepper, cloves, cinnamon, ginger, beans, tomatoes and paprika.
Today Portugal has its own gastronomy, emphasised by traditional and distinctive recipes that delight those that visit. Wine is also a highlight of the Portuguese diet. Since the 12th century, Portuguese fishermen took wines in the ballast of the ships to exchange for groceries in the North Sea. Today Portugal produces some of the best fortified wine in the world Port, Madeira and Carcavelos, making it a much sought after location for a culinary feast.
