www.BeautyServe.com Post-Graduate Training . . . Post-Graduate Training Train to gain! Why you should invest in CPD

With people working hard to tighten their purse strings, the mantra for most people has become save, save, save – at home and in business too. But when it comes to post- graduate training, or Continuing Professional Development (CPD), by not spending you could get left behind.

Advancements in the nail industry move at high-speed, and order to keep up with these changes a regular commitment to training and updating your skills is required.

“Like every sector, the beauty industry is continually growing and developing. What therapists are taught in college only a few years ago outdates quickly. Products, techniques and trends develop; so don’t risk being left behind!” saysMandy Cook, Sales Director at Gerrard International.

“Keeping up with regular refresher and advanced training courses will keep you at the top of your game. Customers will appreciate your finely honed skills and the fact that you are constantly furthering yourself for them.”

If you want to stay relevant to what clients are looking for today, it’s vital that you are constantly updating your skills to offer clients what they want, no matter how hard the current economic climate is. By choosing not to build upon your skills you may be saving money in the short term, but in the long-term this could be damaging. Therefore, it’s important that you build CPD into your budget rather than let it fall to the sidelines and just be one of those things that you do if you have some cash left over.

“CPD is not only vital for college lecturers and education professionals it is an important part of every nail

from it.Ask yourself if the training has the potential to grow sales and if it will help achieve your business goals. Training needs to be seen as an investment in your staff and your business; when chosen carefully it can reap huge returns.”

“The aspects you should be looking for when choosing a course should not be focussed on just training or cost, but most importantly the company that you will be working with afterwards. Are they a nice company to deal with - friendly, helpful, supportive and cater for your needs? If so then this should sway your choice as the course is over very quickly but you want a company that will fulfill your other needs long term,” advises Izabelle Hammon.

If there are things that you want to know about a particular course, write a list of questions to ask either by email or telephone. How quick and how in-depth the answers are could act as an indication as to how reliable and helpful the training provider is.You may also want to think about asking how many other students will be in your class - a class with too many students could result in you not receiving enough one- to-one tuition.

technician’s career,” says Belinda Price, Educator for Palms Extra / Nubar. “By keeping up-to-date we keep this great industry moving forward and standards high.”

Belinda continues: “Continuing Professional Development is a commitment to lifelong learning and one that as a professional we should be keen to pursue, for our own progression, to keep our clients or students interested and current and to raise the profile of this amazing and innovative industry.”

Besides, post-graduate training is more than just an opportunity to develop your existing skills; it’s a chance to show your passion for your industry and the work that you do as well as nurture your enthusiasm for what you do. Plus, meeting up for training in a room full of other nail techs passionate about our industry is also fantastic business development. It gives you the opportunity to meet and chat with like-minded people from all over the country, as well as share ideas that could make your salon

stand out from the rest in your area if you’re able to implement some new ideas.

Choosing your

course There are several factors that should be taken into account in order to find the most appropriate course for you. “When it comes to choosing a course, don’t just go for the cheapest, but at the same time, make sure that you are getting value for money,” advises Mandy. “Assess what is involved in the course, and what you will potentially get

Consider the length of the course and how this will fit into your current work situation and lifestyle. If the course requires you to take a lot of time away from your work, is this feasible? If the course ends up becoming a burden on you, you will fail to give it the full time and concentration that it requires.

And finally, investigate as to whether you will be awarded

with a certificate at the end of the course. It doesn’t sound like much of a deciding factor, but a certificate is proof that you are proficient in a particular treatment or technique. You should always check that the certificate you receive is deemed acceptable for insurance purposes too.

Staff skills

Further training for yourself is definitely one of your main concerns, however, if you run or manage a salon, then your staff and their skills should also be something you think about too.

When you are employing staff, it’s likely that you’re looking for the best possible individuals who won’t let you down and will keep your clients coming back for more. By having staff that are educated it makes them credible; clients will trust in them and won’t want to let anyone else near their nails other than their trusted, well- educated usual nail tech.

Therefore, you may wish to think about investing in your staff too, which will not only keep them up-to-date, but will give your salon a reputation as one of the most up-to-date and knowledgeable salons and seen as ‘moving with the times’.

To develop your business you may wish to consider paying for training for your staff, if this is something you have budgeted for, as, after all, not only will it benefit the individual undergoing training, it will also benefit your business too.
