The Nai l Fi le Autumn 2012 . . . Staff Recruitment . . . Staff Recruitment . . . You’re hired! When it comes to recruitment, if a job’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well.

A salon can only be as good as its staff, and anyone who has ever received a bad nail or beauty treatment can vouch for this. Having the correct nail techs working in a salon is absolutely essential for the success of the business, but finding the right employees can prove a challenge.

Marie-Louise Coster ofAll AboutMi Beauty Training, agrees: “Recruitment can be a real headache for any employer because ultimately your salon reputation relies entirely upon the staff you have and the service they provide, so it is important to really invest the time into assessing exactly what your business needs and where the gaps in the team are.”

If you are a salon owner or manager looking to recruit it can be a daunting task. If you’ve never had to interview anyone before it can feel a bit alien, but knowing exactly what you’re looking for is the first step to make.

Nicky Piper from Beauty Recruitment Plus, specialists in recruitment for the beauty therapy industry, says: “Be honest with yourself about your requirements and realistic in your expectations. You may have been working for yourself and are now considering taking on your first member of staff.

“This is a very big step to take, probably the biggest one you’ll take in fact; you’ll be increasing your finances, workload and responsibilities, exposing your clients to a new person, and possibly risking your reputation if you get it wrong.”

“The therapist needs to be passionate about the industry,” explains Linda Hill, owner of Linda Hill Recruitment. “Clients want to book a treatment with

route of using a recruitment agency because this will provide a better filtering process and they will send you the details of any one they have registered who fits your criteria, this can be a valuable resource as it saves you time,” saysMarie-Louise.

Nicky Piper says: “When searching for staff via a recruitment agency, you will have the help, support, guidance and expertise of the agent to help you work through your requirements. They will advise the most suitable salary for your area, and help you work out a package that you can afford.”

Agencies do charge for the service they provide, but if you are in a position where you have the money but no time, they can be the ideal solution. James Reed of recruitment firm Beautymatch agrees: “Using an agency takes away the hassle and makes the process not just smooth but also time and cost effective,” he says.

Private

advertising If you prefer to go it alone you can advertise privately via word of mouth, local press, in trade publications such as The Nail File or on notice boards in public areas, which is good if you like to be a bit more hands-on.

“When advertising your vacancy be as specific as you can be, include potential hours, salary guide, commission, job opportunities etc., this will save you a lot of wasted time

with unsuitable applicants,” advisesMarie-Louise. “Don’t be afraid to state the specific level of experience you require, any specific brand training that would be advantageous and anything you are looking for in the successful candidate.”

Online ads

For those wanting to utilise online tools to find employees, advertising on websites, such as SpaStaff.com, offers an alternative. These websites allow employers to register, post job ads and search the extensive database for CVs. It can be a great way to seek out staff, and for therapists it can offer great opportunities to get noticed.

Job seekers

It is also a tough time for therapists who are looking to gain employment, with the financial climate meaning a lot of salons can’t afford to take on new staff. But if candidates equip themselves with the correct training and head out with a great C.V., good interview skills and a positive attitude, they can become an invaluable commodity.

So whether you’re seeking out staff, or seeking that perfect salon to work for, put yourself out there and it’s only a matter of time before you’ll get snapped up.

someone who not only provides an excellent treatment but who is positive and has a happy disposition. It is all about the client journey and how the therapist makes the client feel. They need to have the type of personality to which clients will warm.An outstanding
