using a tip or a form to create the extra length. Using a form, the enhancement can be sculpted using just the Gel. The Gel is applied to the natural nail and continued onto the form to the desired length of the enhancement and filed to shape. An overlay of Gel is then applied using a colour of your client’s choice followed by a Gel topcoat.

Nubar’s range of coloured UV Gels features over 40 colours.

Once the coloured Gel is applied, it is cured immediately under a UV lamp, eliminating drying time and making it a quick process for clients as they can leave as soon as the application is finished. This also means that you spend less time with each client, leaving more time to fit in other appointments.

Technail Coloured Acrylic is a range of acrylic powders consisting of a wide choice of colours, suitable for nail art too.

Calgel offer a comprehensive range of coloured Gels, which can be used on the natural nail or on enhancements.

Star Nails’Performance Powders are available from United Beauty in an array of colours.

Calgel offers a comprehensive range of Gel products. The Calgel system is centred on a one-phase Gel system, ideal for nail extensions and semi- permanent nail colour. The Gel is also self-levelling for ease of application.

“Bio Sculpture Gel is suitable for people of all ages and lifestyles and offers a variety of treatment Gels to create custom made overlays and sculptures to suit different types of nails. With the range of treatment Gels, technicians

can cater to the needs of the client, according to their lifestyle and preferences,” says Jodie Levy, Bio Sculpture PRManager.

Bio Sculpture provides a professional glossy nail covering that lasts for up to three weeks. It is applied with minimal buffing and no primers or bonders, so there is no de-hydration of the natural nail. Layers of Gel are applied to the natural nail and cured under UV lamp; the nails are dry to touch once they are cured.

The product range includes various treatment Gels that are tailored to suit specific nail types. This ensures that clients receive the treatment most suited to the condition of their nails. Bio Sculpture Gel is removed with a soak- off solution in less than 15 minutes, leaving natural nails in their original or improved condition. The range also now gives manicurists the option to create different nail finishes - flexible, medium or solid nails – depending on the clients’ nail plate, type and lifestyle choices.

The Gel also allows for nail art to be embedded into it and then sealed with a Gel to protect it, leaving a smooth finish. Nail art trends, including snakeskin, feathers and nail studs have proven to be popular.

Education and training are of the utmost importance to Bio Sculpture Gel. Nail professionals can purchase any of the products once they have committed to do the Bio Sculpture Gel Training Programme, to ensure the product is used correctly and to its true potential.

The Nubar Range of Coloured UV Gels, from Palms Extra, features over 40 coloured Gels, including glitters such as Silver Sparkle andMulti Coloured Glitter, neon brights with Electric Pink, ElectricYellow and Electric Green as well as more traditional Black, Berry, Bright and Chilli Red.

EzFlow’s Gel it!, available from Grafton International, is a hard Gel system, giving the technician the ability to extend, repair and overlay nails using a UV light. The system also includes a pink mask that can be used to extend or cover a client’s nail bed if in poor condition to give the illusion of flawless, natural nail beds.

Gel it! can be used on the natural nail to provide hard, non-porous durable strength, over tips, or onto sculpting forms to create an extension of the client’s natural nail. This Gel system offers the tactile strength and durability of a traditional acrylic.

One of the most common types of nail enhancement systems, acrylic, or Liquid and Powder, can be applied as an enhancement method with either a coloured powder mixed with liquid overlayed onto the natural nail or tip, or used for sculpting. Alternatively, colour can be added over L&P using Gel.

Before beginning an acrylic enhancement, preparation is essential. “It doesn’t matter whether you’re redecorating your home or replanting your garden, making a dress or baking a cake.Whatever task you set out to accomplish, the better your preparation, the easier and better the job will be. The better it will look and the longer it will last,” says Gigi Rouse in her book Nailclass: AwardWinning Advice for the Serious Technician.

“Lack of thorough preparation is the cause of 99%of the ‘lifting’ technicians see in the salon. Thorough prep will take the most time of any part of the whole service; application and finishing will take much less time proportionally.”

The first step is to remove the cuticle before any nail treatment. It is important that before applying an acrylic enhancement all shine is removed so that they are smoothed and refined. You should also eliminate surface contaminations before purifying the nail plate layers.

If your client likes to wear their nails long, an acrylic enhancement could be the right system for them, allowing them then to choose a colour from a powder or Gel range.

Some nail techs can find it difficult to get the hang of acrylic, due to the fact that it involves the mixing of two components (liquid monomer and powder polymer), which if done incorrectly can lead to lifting and shorten the life of the enhancement or colour. Emma-Jayne Fryatt, Nubar Educator suggests lots of practice and training for those techs that are struggling. “When I first started I loved Gels and hated acrylics. I blamed everything – the brush, the brand, the tips – in fact I was ready to throw in the towel, or should I say brush! This was after about three months, but something made me stick with it, I guess I don’t like being beaten.

“With some more training and lots of practice a penny finally dropped and suddenly acrylic was my favourite system. My advice is don’t let it beat you!”
