Malaysia putting focus on international events

introduces a trio of unique venues for international conference groups.


Under a new tagline, “Malaysia –Asia’s Business Events Hub”, Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) has launched the specialised International Events Unit to focus on identifying and supporting international event bids. Malaysia has been ranked seventh meetings


destination in Asia Pacific for the second time in succession, according to International Congress & Convention Association data, while Kuala Lumpur has gone up two notches to 21 in the world rankings. Meanwhile, two locations in Kuala Lumpur, the


Central Market and Thean Hou Temple, have been identified by Tourism Malaysia as possible off-site unique venues, or shell sites for international meet- ings, incentives and conventions. MyCEB has also signed an MOU with Putrajaya


Maritime Centre, also declared as a shell site. In the heart of Kuala Lumpur, the 1936 Central


Market has been converted into a “festive hall”, reopening in 1996 as a cultural shopping centre. It has also been classified as a heritage site. Central Market offers versatility as an off-site


event venue seating up to 650 people, while event organisers have the possibility to organise an Amazing Race event in the market and its environs. Dedicated to the Queen of Heaven, Thean Hou is


one of the largest Chinese temples in South-East Asia and features dragon-inspired columns and pagoda rooftops. Its entrance is a multi-arched gateway with red pillars, decorative beams, domes, calligraphy and murals. Other attractions include a medicinal herbs garden, wishing well and tortoise pond, plus statues. For groups, the temple is available for ceremonial banquets or gala dinners in its front hallway (up to 1000 guests). Incentive programs can include classes for making lanterns and mooncakes. Close to the Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia’s federal


administrative centre, the Putrajaya Maritime Centre offers activities by Putrajaya lake. Its Plaza offers meeting rooms, banquet hall and VIP lounges, while The Promenade features a ferry terminal. The centre can cater for groups of up to 1000 people. INFO www.myceb.com.my


Centre offers signature experiences


Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre has intro- duced a range of signature experiences for meeting planners. A feature is the Day Conference Packages


with a Difference, which addresses “grudge” pur- chases – industry jargon for AV and technical equipment not usually reflected in the initial costs quoted for meetings and events, explains director of sales and marketing Angeline Lue. “Mindful of this, we have expanded these packages to incorporate most of the items you would normally pay for independently. We have sweetened the deal to include AV support such as a complimentary Notebook, presentation pointer, lapel and wireless micro- phones, DVD player, and laptop interfaces, complemented by enhanced food and beverage offerings.” Lue says the centre has always advocated


value-adds for its products and services to elimi- nate as many unplanned cost lines as possible.


Other new signature experiences include


TenOnCall Plus, Five-Star Banqueting, Snack on Arrival and the enhanced Cultural Showcase. TenOnCall Plus is an extension offering


three extra spaces, each with free-flow lifestyle cuisine and beverage service plus private meeting room and smoking area. Lue says the banqueting experience has


value-adds including customised menus, foyer decoration, butler service for VIP tables and silver service. Snack on Arrival offers a complimentary snack with coffee or tea and an “energiser shot”. Meanwhile, the centre has acquired 2600sq.m. of extra space – a semi-permanent marquee, known as Hall 6, for exhibitions, conferences and other events. “This space will be available for the next


12 to 24 months with a limited extension possible,” says general manager Datuk Peter Brokenshire. E
