citadel for data

reputation as a secure safe haven saw the town become an alternative seat of government in the event of a nuclear attack. In the 1980s Corsham became the communications centre for the Emergency Government War HQ. However, operations were scaled down following the end of the Cold War and today Spring Park hosts a new facility strategically positioned to deliver networks of the future.

After the Spring Park site was decommissioned by the MoD the council approached Ark to redevelop the area, which is also the site of a major interconnect node on the TalkTalk UK network. Multiple other carriers are also on hand. And being positioned close to two national power grids ensures that the lights will never go out. Not surprisingly, TalkTalk Business has emerged from its multi-million pound data centre investment looking determined and powerful. “A key driver for us is to drive value solutions to customers,” added Mullender. “We have placed our new data centre on the core of TalkTalk Business’ main UK network, enabling us to deliver services to customers with all of the technology hidden.”

Smart moves make for smart growth, and it all starts with business grade connectivity, believes Mullender. “Our NGN is essential for reliability and resilience,” he explained. “The second component of a hosting solution is the data centre. Ours sits on a major node, directly connected via multiple diverse fibre paths to TalkTalk Business’ UK-wide network with over four terabits per second of capacity. The

third component is the application itself that sits in the network. For example, hosted UC, an alternative to a traditional PBX without the physical onsite equipment in the customer’s premise.”

Collective buzz

A collective buzz among the TalkTalk Business decision makers about their roadmap to the cloud was first audible two months ago when the telco launched its hosted UC proposition during an education seminar for channel partners at the Grand Connaught Rooms in Covent Garden, London. The hosted portfolio is based on the Mitel Communications Director (MCD), an IP-PBX software solution that forms the hub of a larger collection of channel offerings, each of which will be integrated into TalkTalk Business’ Next Generation Network. The kit bag includes Hosted Contact Centre, Hosted UC, Hosted Call Recording (a fully managed, secure call recording solution that helps support PCI compliance) and the Spring Park hosted data centre.

Paul Higgins, Head of Marketing at TalkTalk Business, noted: “Our core network enables us to build out access and connectivity layers, and across the edges of these we add the application layer. Migrating services and infrastructure to the NGN allows our partners the ability to offer their customers cost benefits and increase the efficiencies in their operations,

enabling them to transform their business with the intelligent use of converged applications. IT directors talk about business issues and driving away complexity, we talk about how the technical

innovation and scale of our network allows our partners to do just that. And mindful of today’s economy we can be disruptive on prices. We will talk to partners about how they can maximise this opportunity and how they can make money from what is an enormous addressable market.”

According to Bligh, TalkTalk Business’ new data centre far advances the firm’s aggressive strategy in the hosted space and forms the central theme in his ‘energetic expansion’ of the hosted story. “The strategic advantage this new data centre gives us is considerable,” he said. “To fulfil our ambitions in the hosted space we needed a future proof, efficient, and scalable hub and this is exactly what the new data centre gives us. This is a foundation which will help us achieve our hosted ambitions and provide another layer of opportunity on top of our connectivity portfolio for our partners.”

Bligh believes that the data centre will become a key component for partners who have one eye on the future. He added: “Our partners see hosted services as a crucial growth area so the new data centre, combined with our Next Generation Network which offers connectivity to 93 per cent of the population, will pave the way for this forthcoming growth. TalkTalk Business has been a channel-focused business since it started as Opal in 1995, so developing products that support our partners is very much part of the strategy, as well as offering multiple levels of account management and full operational and technical support.”
