Goodwell

University will scholarship all tuition and fees for concurrent enroll- ment for high school

students who are eligible to take concurrent courses. The only expense the students will be responsible for is the purchase or rental of textbooks.

OPSU is well known for its agriculture and rodeo programs but the university has many other facets. “Teacher education has been a historical strength here,” Bry- ant said. “We produce right at 60 percent of the public school teachers in the Oklahoma Panhandle and surrounding fi ve- state area. Business and Technology is another school that is relatively new but very important from the standpoint of basic business degrees. Academic teams from this school have per- formed very well in both regional and national contests.” Bryant said the University is proud of its unusual connection to NASA.

“NASA actively seeks us out when they’re looking for com- puter school graduates,” Bryant said. “We currently have 13 graduates working for NASA or its contractors. Who would have thought a small regional institution in the middle of No Man’s Land would have a connection to NASA?” The University’s nursing program is a fairly recent addition to the school’s line-up. According to Bryant, students from the science and math programs at the college frequently go on to attend professional programs like pharmacy, medical or vet- erinarian schools at other institutions after they obtain their four-year degree from OPSU.

“I think this is a testament to the quality of student we have at OPSU,” he said. “I attribute this to the size of our university and the personal attention students receive here.” Enrollment at the college is around 1,200 students each year and averages about 200 graduates a year. It has had historic highs in enrollment in recent years, which Bryant said is partly thanks to OPSU’s position as one of the most affordable uni- versities in the state, especially in terms of total cost of atten- dance.

Part of OPSU’s niche in the community is producing gradu- ates who stay and work in the area at places like Tri-County Electric, Seaboard Foods, Hitch Enterprises and the like. In addition to producing graduates, the University’s economic impact is felt in the communities it serves.

“Just in raw economic terms, the University has more than $30 million in direct economic input into this area,” Bryant said.

Because Tri-County Electric’s Board of Trustees and manage- ment team understand the value and impact of the University on the communities they jointly serve, the cooperative plans to continue supporting the University however possible.
