In spite of the rather dismal weather this is turning out to be an exciting summer with the Jubilee celebrations behind us and with the Olympics fast approaching. There has been some debate as to the economic benefits of hosting The Olympic Games with the original budget of £2.4bn having risen to something nearer £9bn. A large percentage of this has come from the British taxpayer so is it worth it we ask ourselves? I admit to being an enthusiastic supporter of London 2012 and am excited about having tickets to see the gymnastics and volleyball (not the beach variety!) as well as several events in the Paralympics. For the country as a whole it is argued that the benefits are far reaching with an
improvement in infrastructure such as transport and housing as well as new and improved sporting venues. It has provided jobs and economic activity, particularly important as we are struggling with recession and the problems within the EU. Hosting the Olympics is a boost to Britain’s prestige, offering us a ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity to provide a showcase to the world. But most important of all, to readers of this magazine are the benefits to the construction industry. Culture secretary Jeremy Hunt was quoted as saying "Britain has proved that not only can we put on a great show for the world to watch like we did with the Jubilee but that we can also deliver big construction projects on time and on budget." Hugh Robertson, the Sports Minister added that the latest budget figures were "a great advert for the British construction industry, for sport and for UK Plc". Estimates suggest that more than 180,000 more workers were needed within the industry to complete the regeneration and infrastructure projects. We can look to these benefits reaching into the future, as there are projects that will need to continue after the games such as converting the Olympic Village into homes and changes to the venues and the Olympic Park. Whether you agree that the Olympics is of economic benefit to the country or not, lets enjoy London 2012 and take pride in our achievements in hosting this prestigious event.
