Mackays of Cambridge celebrate 100 years trading at 85 East Road Cambridge
The Tool retailer and ironmongery company MacKays of Cambridge Ltd recently celebrated it’s 100th anniversary of trading at 85 East Road Cambridge. MacKays commenced trading in June 1912 as D MacKay after the founder Donald MacKay walked into the workshop of the
wheelwright company Alsop and sons and made the owner a straightforward no-nonsense offer. “A fine business you have here, do you want to sell it?” The deal was struck over the anvil. The firm celebrated with a party for 200 staff, past staff and partners in the
grounds of Roebuck House home of the company Chairman Donald MacKay (grandson of the founder). The party culminated with the cutting of a massive cake in the shape of 100,
followed by a firework display showcasing some of the premier fireworks now stocked by Mackays. Joint Managing Director Neil Mackay welcomed everyone to the party and said,
“It is wonderful to see so many colleagues old and new here to celebrate this momentous milestone in the history of the company.” As part of the celebrations Donald MacKay published a book called ‘Memories
from the Cambridge firm of
D.MacKay’ a copy of which was presented to all who attended. The book describes some of the huge variety of engineering projects undertaken by the company during the past century. There are so many amazing
stories in the book. Many of the engineers who carried out the work were present at the party. The book also describes the development of the trading side of the business from its earliest beginnings.
