Safety/Security
The Importance of Health and Safety, and Security It is the responsibility of every employer to ensure the safety of their employees and take sufficient steps to prevent accidents in the workplace. Each year millions of workdays are lost because of workplace related accident or illness. The Construction industry has the second highest accident figures of any business sector, with Agriculture topping the league. It is therefore vitally important those within the industry do their utmost to minimize the dangers. The most common types of injury or accident are trips, slips and falls, electrical incidents and those caused by handling and lifting. Wearing good safety clothing
including appropriate footwear can minimise the most common hazards. To work safely with electricity it is essential to use well-maintained and safe equipment. There are many products on the market to facilitate safer handling and lifting and of course it is important that training is given in correct handling procedures. Hundreds of people also die after being struck by a moving or falling object or being trapped by something falling or collapsing. At a recent Trade Show we listened
to a presentation by a company called Tool@rrest who have grasped this problem and have come up with a certified and flexible solution to this hazard with a simple lanyard attachment and tethers for tools to help prevent dropped objects. Another common injury can be caused by vibration when using tools. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) give advice to those considering buying power tools
and what information they should expect from a good supplier to minimize the risks. The industry continually strives to improve the safety for those working with tools and new, improved products in all sectors continually come to the market.
Keeping tools and equipment safely stored and secure is also important and there are also many solutions on the market for improving security. Thieves often target expensive tools and investment in security products is essential for peace of mind. Two months ago in edition196, the Voice of the Industry article gave a wealth of information on padlocks including details of a new material called TITALIUM™ used in padlock production. ‘Hear The Difference’ Marcrist International has been a market leader in the field of diamond construction tools for over 30 years and are now launching an innovative diamond blade in the UK, the new blade offers revolutionary levels of noise reduction combined with outstanding cutting performance. It’s currently estimated that 2,000,000 people are exposed to potentially
harmful levels of occupational noise and 500,000 people are already suffering due to exposure to noise at work in the UK, occupational noise has become a National epidemic. Current UK Law states that the maximum permissible noise on a building site is
87db(A), and conventional 230mm diamond blades emit between 105-107 db(A) whilst cutting. By law the Employer (including Self-employed) is responsible for ensuring that
this noise is controlled at source. The Law clearly states that employers must use or hire noise reduced equipment, and employers who risk contravening the law are liable for compensation claims. The current compensation levels for occupational hearing loss can be as high as
£60,000.00. The groundbreaking BF850 SilentMAX not only gives the operator many
advantages in blade cutting performance expected from Marcrist, with the fastest cut and longest life combination, but also reduces the potential dangers of hearing loss through the use of blades on hand held machines. The Marcrist BF850 SilentMAX is the
only blade on the market today that offers noise reduction that complies with current UK law and also gives superior cutting performance. This blade has been independently tested
by a leading EU Health & Safety Organisation (BG BAU) and they have designated the Marcrist BF850 SilentMAX blade as ‘State of the Art ‘, tests have shown the BF850 SilentMAX gives up to 16x noise reduction in the range of diameters from 115mm to 400mm.
