ECA CALLS FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY

THE ENERGY BILL WAS ANNOUNCED IN the Queen’s Speech on 9 May, and while the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) is yet to fi nalise details of the Bill, its overriding aim is to incentivise electricity producers to increase low carbon electricity generation. It is expected that government will agree frameworks for contracts with electricity generators to promote low carbon electricity. These contracts will state that, where the production of low carbon electricity is uneconomic compared to traditional fossil fuel-generated electricity, the contracts will be subsidised by government. Paul Reeve, ECA head of environment,

said: ‘There are six options for generating more electricity in the UK – oil, gas, coal, nuclear, renewable and, of course, energy effi ciency. While we welcome initiatives that encourage low carbon energy production, the most sustainable and cost-effective way to meet demand for electricity is to actively pursue energy effi ciency.’

ESC LAUNCHES SAFE ISOLATION APP

THE ELECTRICAL SAFETY Council (ESC) has launched a ‘Safe Isolation’ app for iPhones and iPads that aims to help tackle the dangerous practice of working on live electrical systems. The app is based on

ESC’s Best Practice Guide No 2 (Guidance on the management of electrical safety and safe isolation procedures for low voltage isolation). Designed to be as easy to use as possible, it adopts a step-by-step approach to achieving safe isolation, with a series of illustrations and simple instructions. Martyn Allen, the head

of the ESC’s Technical Development Unit, said: ‘There is no excuse for inappropriate live working, or inadequate safety

precautions. By routinely and invariably following a simple, step-by-step approach to safe isolation, you can prevent injuries and fatalities. The ESC’s Safe Isolation app has been developed to remind everyone working on, or near, electrical equipment how to work safely.’

The app can be

downloaded from the App Store, searchable under the term ‘safe isolation’.
