Conference, with a series of thought-provoking presentations from high-calibre speakers, from the industry and beyond, over a stimulating three days of business sessions. The premier event in the electrical industry calendar, the conference this year took place in Paphos, Cyprus, and the theme for 2012 was ‘Generating opportunity, securing the future’. Throughout the conference, speakers delivered fresh perspectives on key industry issues as well as insights into the opportunities and challenges that will shape the future of the electrical contracting industry. The tone was positive but realistic, with plenty of practical advice, ideas and information for delegates to bring back to their businesses. Energy effi ciency and the

sustainability agenda were once again hot topics, with appraisals of the Green Deal and other government initiatives to promote energy effi ciency and renewables, overviews of technological developments that could benefi t contractors, and discussion on how opportunities in the green market can be effectively realised. The challenges facing the sector were acknowledged, too. From sector-by-sector analysis of the UK economy to the critical importance of customer retention, and from the dangers of counterfeit products to ensuring effective credit control, speakers brought home the message about preparing for the future by being switched on to opportunities from existing business – and maintaining sound practice in running their operations. Conference sponsors also hosted a series of events throughout the week, including the traditional black-tie Electrium/Osram/ECA Gala Dinner. Here, we review some of the highlights.

NEW LOOK FOR 2013 We’re looking forward to a new, exciting format for the ECA conference in 2013. The new event will be at the ICC in Birmingham, running for three days from 20-22 June, and will include a high-level business conference, technical seminars and a product exhibition under the banner ‘Technology Live’, which will be open to contractors who just want to attend that day. It will also feature the inauguration of the new ECA president, a series of social networking events, plus a gala dinner and awards evening.
