Legrand opens up a smart new world

LEGRAND IS CELEBRATING THE GROWING success of its My Open online community and OpenWebNet open protocol. My Open was developed with the intention of becoming the online home for those active, or wishing to specialise, in the fi eld of integrated smart solutions. Tailored specifi cally towards Legrand’s lighting, heating, AV and security control systems, the community currently has more than 10,000 registered users. OpenWebNet is an open protocol language that allows developers to build control Apps for any of Legrand’s smart products and systems. These can then be

submitted to My Open and, if accepted, distributed or sold via the site’s fast-growing app gallery.

Richard Hayward, marketing manager

for Legrand’s wiring device division, said: ‘Smart technology is becoming commonplace in homes and offi ces, and as with any fast-growing technology, there is a thirst for knowledge and a desire to improve on existing systems and processes. Our aim has been to bring all this together in one online forum that enables interested parties to share ideas, solve problems, create new solutions and processes, and between them build an invaluable knowledge base.’

BEAMA launches EV infrastructure guide

BEAMA RECENTLY HOSTED ITS SECOND annual Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Conference on Smart Charging Networks for Electric Vehicles. Some 60 delegates from infrastructure, meter and vehicle manufacturers, energy retailers, network operators and government discussed emerging issues in the EV industry and highlighted priority areas of action for the market to encourage the mass adoption of EVs.

BEAMA launched its Guide to Electric

Vehicle Infrastructure at the Conference. The guide outlines best practice use and application of electrical infrastructure for EV charging. With more than 3,000 charging points installed in the UK to date and rapid growth forecast, this guide, along with the IET Code of Practice, details the range and availability of different charging solutions that are now available. Yselkla Farmer, coordinator of the BEAMA Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Project. Said: ‘The conference made it clear that there is still a need for improved coordination in the industry to avoid further market fragmentation and improve the network connections between public

infrastructure. Short-term priorities need to focus on creating a strong consumer offer and improving the consumer awareness of progress that has been made, and the technology that is available. This would motivate EV update and encourage the mass adoption of EVs.’

In brief

 Designed specifi cally to aid the installation of solar PV panels, Megger’s new PVM210 solar irradiance meter features a compact design that, unlike most other irradiance meters, has the solar detector on the top of the instrument. This arrangement, combined with the useful measurement hold function, makes the PVM210 easy and convenient to use – even with just one hand – when working on a sloping roof or at the top of a ladder.

 Hastings Borough Council is trialling a Voltis commercial voltage optimisation system from Marshall-Tuffl ex to see it can help cut energy bills at small to medium-sized council locations. The council, which has an obligation to conserve energy wherever possible, selected Voltis for its cost- effectiveness and the fact that it is manufactured in Hastings.

 Engenie has commenced the rollout of the UK's very fi rst rapid charging network, as supplied by Schneider Electric. The rapid charge units will be installed nationwide over the next few months across Roadchef motorway service areas, covering the breadth and width of the country.

 The Seaward Group has been awarded the Supplier of the Year title in this year’s Hire Awards of Excellence. Organised by the HAE, the Hire Awards of Excellence are designed to genuinely recognise excellence throughout the hire industry. Although all awards are independently judged, the Supplier of the Year award won by Seaward was determined by customer votes.

 To provide electrical contractors with all the test equipment they need for installing, commissioning

and fault fi nding solar power installations, Megger is offering two new high specifi cation solar power test kits – the PVK320 and PVK330.

 BPT Security Systems has launched a new Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) entry panel that, unlike comparable products, negates the need for dual height panels to fully accommodate both wheelchair and standing users.

 Aico has released Application Expert – a support document designed to provide tried-and- tested solutions to diffi cult fi re alarm applications. Over the years, Aico has been applying its expertise to solving hundreds of tricky installation dilemmas and here, in Application Expert, it brings together the solutions.

 Sundog Energy has been selected by Samsung to spearhead its drive into the UK solar market. For the fi rst time, Samsung’s 250W panels are available in the UK and will be distributed by Sundog Wholesale, the distribution arm of Sundog Energy.

 Globally recognised as an engineering marvel and symbol of New York City, the Empire State Building has selected Philips to transition the building’s iconic tower lights to innovative LEDs.
