Suffolk-based ECA registered member Boggis Electrical is turning a respectable 75 years old this year. The company originated from local engineer Clement Boggis who founded C.C Boggis Ltd. in 1937. William Reeves then joined the company and took over the electrical division, which he then handed over to his son, David, who joined in 1957 as an apprentice and succeeded his father as managing director in 1972. The business was eventually sold to Jeremy Turner and his wife Toni-Ann in 2007. Jeremy was an apprentice within the company in the 1980s. The historical success of Boggis Electrical is its ability to engineer projects to suit the client’s needs, particularly within the farming sector with irrigation control systems. This philosophy is maintained, and the company continually adapts its core business, most recently with the addition of photovoltaic systems and energy efficient products. ‘As a small business, we pride ourselves on our high levels of customer

service and technical ability,’ said Jeremy Turner, director of Boggis Electrical, ‘from the staff who work in the office through to our engineers out on site. We have many long term and loyal customers that reflect this attention to detail.’

Northern Ireland contractors urged to support ECA

Contractors in Northern Ireland are being asked to help create a stronger industry in the province by joining the ECA.

In a wide-ranging speech at the ECA annual dinner at the Culloden Hotel, Holywood, Gary Upton, ECA chairman of the Northern Ireland branch, said a larger association would benefit the industry. ‘It has been a tough few years for the industry and it is hoped that the recession has bottomed out and that the industry can look to a brighter future in the years to come,’ he said. ‘The members of the ECA welcome the services made available to them through their membership, and we would encourage other contractors who sit outside the association – but still benefit from the success that we have in lobbying government and other bodies – to consider their own position. ‘A larger, stronger ECA can only be of benefit to the whole industry.’ Northern Ireland-based contractors looking for more information on the ECA and how to join can visit the website at www.eca.co.uk or contact regional manager Alfie Watterson on 028 9147 9527.

Summer seminar for West Midlands

West Midlands held a wet and windy summer seminar on 31 May that went down a storm, with more than 60 people attending. Taking place at the Chase Golf Club, Staffordshire, this event included a talk on the ECA Designgenie software package and an overview on the Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) that came into place in January this year. As an added bonus, a memory stick for Designgenie was on sale for £20 for client members to trial.

Gary Parker, ECA technical department

Gordon Grigor from Schneider Electric bought along the Schneider Electric Nissan Leaf, and delegates were given the opportunity to take the vehicle for a spin. West Midlands regional manager Steve Roberts gave it a whirl and was very impressed with performance and styling, but stated: ‘We need to get a better charging infrastructure in the UK before electric vehicles can

be fully utilised by business.’ Steve also suggested that he could see in the next five years a massive increase in electric vehicle sales, especially now that most vehicle manufacturers had an electric vehicle to offer. Gordon reinforced this in his presentation, which electrified the audience.

Northern lights Lutron

Presenter Dan Sparrow with ECA member Andy Buchan of Tees Testing

The first North East regional event was held at the Durham Marriott Royal County Hotel on Wednesday 13 June. The morning session, specifically for ECA members,

proved to be both educational and thought-provoking for all those who attended. The main theme was the ‘seven stages of lighting control’ and demonstrated new technology in action. A further event for the North East region will be held in the Leeds area on 18 July. Members will be notified of the venue by email, and details will also be available on the public events page of the ECA website, as well as via The Source.
