SECTOR SPOTLIGHT COMBOS
Sutherland
The LU22TS from Lanikai – the “fastest growing and market leading ukulele brand,” according to Sutherland – is the latest addition to its mahogany uke offering. Suitable for ambitious hobby players and serious musicians, the LU22TS (£149) is a tenor uke close to the classic Hawaiian design, featuring a slotted headstock, individual open gear tuners, Aquila strings, satin finish and white ABS binding. For decades the Morino accordion from Hohner has set standards in the market for its balanced and powerful sound. Consistent development of the instrument – both in terms of construction and materials – has led to enhanced tone quality and power in both treble and bass. The Morino 1V 96 starts at £6,400 and the 1V 120 (pictured) retails from £7,099. All Morino components can now be specially built and modified according to the customer’s preferences. No matter how ‘outrageous’, every design idea can be realised through the use of professional airbrushing. Also from Hohner, the Flexrack harmonica harness (£54.99) lets users play hands free when using other instruments, such as guitars and keyboards. It can be adjusted quickly using the three different points and it offers sturdy construction and stability.
Gremlin
Available in Soprano, Concert, Tenor and Baritone, the first batch of Ashbury’s new AU-40 ukuleles (from £45.95, pictured) sold out at Gremlin in record time. It features flame oak top, back and sides, satin finish, Aquila strings, mahogany neck, rosewood fingerboard, flame maple headplate, buffalo tone nut and saddle, plastic B/W/B binding and open geared machine heads. Gremlin’s best selling UK-made whistle is the Dixon Trad High D, which retails at £17. It has a tuneable ABS head and lightweight brass body and produces a mellow sound. The supplier is also expecting its first batch of Tony Dixon’s new Low D Trad whistles, retailing at £99. Susato has brought out Oriole, a new range of lower priced whistles available in high D, C, Bb and Eb, all for £20.95. A Susato Oriole Whistle Set consisting of one headjoint and four interchangeable bodies in C, D, Eb and Bb is also available for £55.
C.F. Martin
C.F Martin and Co. has been building high quality ukuleles since 1916 and the company now offers a broad range. The S1 Uke is a soprano-sized model with solid mahogany top, back and sides, joined with a dovetail mahogany neck. It produces a sweet and warm sound and retails at £379. The C1K concert-sized model (£469) features a solid koa top, back and sides – a wood native to Hawaii and “a favourite of island players.” The entire body is finished in high quality satin lacquer and includes an applied dovetail neck joint.
Martin has built tenor ukes since 1929 that have long been prized for their full-bodied voice and great volume. The T1K tenor-sized model (£479, pictured) also features an Hawaiian koa top, back and sides and again the body is finished in high quality satin lacquer and offers a dovetail neck joint.
